Optical effect

The light sculpture (LS 9803) is created as a volatile structure and its effect depends on the darkness and the degree of air and particle density, haze or blowing snow in its environment. The light sculpture results from the interplay of nature and technology, of intent and chance. The viewer can perceive changing effects, the best of which is because of the light reflection when blowing snow. It is not a question of the usual building illumination, but rather light art that communicates with the building and the surrounding air. As a temporary work of art that is created over and over again, the light sculpture is dedicated to the cultural capital Weimar 1999 . The light sculpture can be seen coming from the A4 motorway .

history

The architect Peter Mittmann had the idea, based on an observation in 1995 in Hamburg during the night during the fog, that an appearance similar to that in Lyonel Feininger's pictures could be realized. The trials with BEGA on the factory premises and on site lasted until March 1998. The project was funded by the Freundeskreis Weimar-Kulturstadt Europa 1999 e. V. and realized by numerous sponsors, including Jenoptik AG Jena, Meissner u. Wurst GmbH & Co Stuttgart, Osram GmbH Berlin, Sparkasse Weimar. Since March 2012 the city of Weimar has taken over the sponsorship with the support of the StadtWerke Weimar. The light sculpture is currently shining from Thursday to Sunday, always in complete darkness until midnight.

Technical specifications

High-pressure metal halide lamps in the colors blue and green, which were used here for a work of art for the first time, are used. Compared to general service lamps with color filters, these only have 15% of the comparable output. The installation also has high-performance spotlights with rotationally symmetrical light distribution, a visibility measuring device for weather-sensitive control, a radio-controlled and now time-controlled switchgear. A new lighting technology with LEDs is currently being developed.

Church and painter

The Gelmeroda Church runs like a leitmotif through all creative periods of the German-American painter Lyonel Feininger and became world famous through him. In its simple, clear form, it has experienced expressive interpretations, especially in the expressive cubist paintings of the master. They are the model for the conception of the light sculpture. "... paintings from the surrounding villages, which all appeared to me in a fairytale light during my bike trips ... Gelmerodas without number ..." (quotation on April 3, 1952). The church has been the first motorway church in the new federal states since 1994 .
