With 799 inhabitants and an area of around 11 km², Loikum is the smallest district in the city of Hamminkeln (27,899 inh. / 164 km², as of December 31, 2010). Hamminkeln is located in the northern part of the Wesel district , in the Issel valley .

The village has within the city Hamminkeln essentially the function of the home, and it has evolved from an originally dominated by agriculture place a town with agriculture.

history

The historical origins of Loikum go back to the Franconian times. The syllable “Loik” in the place name is interpreted as a short form for Clovis or Ludwig, and the syllable “um” or “hem” means home. Thus the name Loikum can be translated as "Ludwigsheim". Loikum is first mentioned in a document as "Leodinghem" in the Werdener Urbar of the 9th century. In the Xanten archive of the 12th century, the place is called "Burscapium Loinkhem". The word “burscapium” means “peasantry” (not “peasantry”) and in the Middle Ages had nothing to do with “peasants”, but is derived from the Old High German “bur” = house and originally means a farm association or a small settlement complex.

At the end of March 1945 Loikum was involved in the largest one-day air landing operation of World War II . This measure, which was called Operation Varsity , served the crossing of the Rhine by British and US military units.

Until the end of the 1950s, Loikum was a small farming community . The village center was formed by the church, the school, two farms (with a small restaurant as a sideline) to the right and left of the church, a few houses and small craft businesses (bricklayer, painter, miller, blacksmith, carpenter). In addition, there was a bakery with a small grocery store and another restaurant, the owner of which also ran a small grocery store.

In the 1960s, Loikum grew to the size of the village today through the construction of the "old settlement" and at the beginning of the 1970s through the "new settlement". Most of the Loikumers built in the old settlement, while newcomers from various cities in the Ruhr area built their own homes in the new settlement . The outdoor areas have always been characterized by individual courtyards.

By the Lower Rhine Act , Loikum was incorporated into Hamminkeln on January 1, 1975.

For some time now there has been a citizens' bus in Loikum , which connects Loikum with Wertherbruch , Dingden , Bocholt and Hamminkeln . It is driven by citizens from different places. A shared call taxi (AST) can be used with half-hour notice.

There are women jobs in agricultural businesses, in the offices of the craft and commercial enterprises, in the kindergarten, in the parish office, in the restaurants, in the horticultural company and in an architectural office.

Life in Loikum

Until the business was closed in 1998, the supply of groceries and everyday goods was guaranteed by a store with a supermarket-like range. Since then, the residents have been able to buy supplies once a week from the sales car of an agricultural direct marketer from the neighboring village of Dingden and at the “Niederrheinischen Bauernmarkt”, which takes place every Friday on the village square.

The age structure shows the following picture: under 18 years: 167 people, from 18 to 60 years: 426 people, over 60 years: 127 people. The number of new citizens is 279, i. H. the ratio of long-established residents and new residents is around 3: 1. Through the activities of the groups and associations and through the actions of the village community, the new citizens are fully integrated into village life.

The citizens' hall is the central meeting place for citizens. After three years of construction, during which around 12,000 hours of voluntary work were performed, the inauguration took place in 1990. Another important meeting room is the parish hall, which was built in 1986 in the course of a necessary renovation from the former farm building of the pastorate with great personal contribution by the parishioners. The sports and playground facility in the center of the village is often used by Loikum children and adults and is also a destination for cyclists and visitors from abroad.

The church of St. Antonius and the mill are under monument protection. The origins of the church can be traced back to the 16th century. Your organ was built by the organ builder Franz Breil from Dorsten and restored in 2006 by the Rensch organ building workshop . Loikum has been an independent parish since 1541.

The cap windmill was built in 1856 from around 500,000 field bricks and expanded in 1940 with an extension for the agricultural trade. It has been out of service since 1984.

The village is surrounded by agricultural land, which is mainly used for grassland and pasture farming and fodder cultivation (mainly maize). The land consolidation with the amalgamation of commercial areas (and the associated clearing of the landscape) was completed at the beginning of the 1970s. Since 1994, the Loikum village community has carried out planting and maintenance activities in the outdoor areas every autumn. So far, around seven kilometers of farm roads have been planted with around 650 tall trunks (oak, ash, alder) and 1,860 hedge bushes (hornbeam, hawthorn, sloes, wild roses). This has created a new habitat for birds, small animals and insects as well as the networking of different biotopes. For some years now, special emphasis has been placed on the planting and maintenance of the polluted willows typical of the landscape . The number of orchards on full-time and part-time farms has increased in recent years.

The Issel River is an important landscape design element . The Issel fulfills the function of a receiving water and meanders through the village. Thanks to the cleaning power of the sewage treatment plant, the water quality is good and allows for diverse fish stocks again.

Geologically speaking, the village of Loikum lies in the area between the Rheinaue and the Niederterrasse. In the glacial valley of the Rhine , rich gravel deposits were created here during the Ice Age. The mining of the natural resource of gravel is shown in the regional plan up to the eastern edge of the village in an area of around 50 hectares and means both threat and opportunity for Loikum. This can lead to conflicts of interest between the excavation company (entrepreneurial interest, securing jobs) and the citizens (maintaining quality of life, avoiding lasting damage). Because of these problems, the Loikum village community is in constant contact with the interested operating company, the city of Hamminkeln and the Wesel district. The aim is to preserve and shape the village and the rural area in such a way that they also offer lively future and development opportunities for future generations.
