The Drevenacker Dunes are a nature reserve of around 199 hectares (NSG identification WES-091) between Wesel and Hünxe on the Lower Rhine. The two parts of the nature reserve are located north of the Lippe River . Nearby are the Wesel district of Wittenberg and the Hünx district of Drevenack , after which the area is named.

The nature reserve was established in 2009. The former nature reserve Aaper Vennekes (WES-030) and Sternenberge (WES-033) as well as parts of the former nature reserve Pliesterbergsche Sohlen (WES-032) merged into it. Most of the areas of the NSG Drevenacker Dünen are also in the larger FFH area DE-4306-302 NSG complex In den Drevenacker Dünen, with an extension (however, the northern tip of the NSG east of Wittenberg and some marginal areas are left out). This means that the relevant areas are part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

landscape

The nature reserve comprises several landforms, including forest and heath areas with moors. Inland dunes that reach a height of up to four meters are characteristic of the landscape . They were formed during the last glacial period . The dunes consist of dry sandy soil with a low proportion of loam and clay , which means that the soil is poor in nutrients and can store little water. In the middle of the dune landscape, however, there are also more humid depressions, under which there is a water-retaining layer of clay, so that there are heather bogs and wet heaths in some places . Lean sand lawns as a rare form of landscape also occur.

A number of paths lead through the Drevenacker Dunes area, starting in particular from the RWE road in Wesel-Wittenberg.

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve is largely forested. The tree population is mainly characterized by pine and oak-birch mixed forests. In the damp areas there are bog forests, in which birch , ash and alder are particularly common. The protected animal species of the Drevenacker Dunes include the sand lizard , woodlark , honey buzzard , black woodpecker and smooth snake . Sections of the Aaper Vennekes are temporarily grazed with sheep . These should serve to preserve the heathland there.
