The Isselniederung nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the town of Hamminkeln in the Wesel district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the largest nature reserve (NSG) in the Wesel district.

The area, which consists of ten sub-areas, extends northwest, north, east and southeast of the core town of Hamminkeln on both sides of the B 473 . Through the area through which runs A 3 and flows the Issel . The B 70 runs along the south-eastern edge and the Rhine flows to the west .

If you move downriver with the Issel towards the mouth of the Rhine, you come across another area called "Isselniederung - Rodehorst area ", which does not belong to the NSG. The Borken district begins here east of the Issel .

For Hamminkeln an area of ​​1856.83 hectares has been designated as a nature reserve under the identification number WES-052 since 1991 . The area was placed under protection for the preservation, creation and restoration of a lowland landscape with its characteristic biotope types and communities, predominantly characterized by grassland and woody structures .
