Lichtenhagen is about 110 hectares wide conservation area in the districts Cancels and Overbeck the municipality Schermbeck on the Lower Rhine . A 99 ha part of the nature reserve is also designated as FFH area DE-4207-301 Lichtenhagen , which means that this area is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .
The Lichtenhagen nature reserve is a former clay excavation area in the natural area of the “Lower Rhine sand plates”, which has developed into a biotope complex of heather areas , still waters as well as floodplain , quarry and oak forests . The area is particularly important as a habitat for amphibians and reptiles - the common occurrence of adders , smooth snakes and grass snakes is unique in the country. The preservation and optimization of this habitat are the most important protection goals in the Lichtenhagen nature reserve.
The following species, which are specially protected according to the fauna, flora, habitat and bird protection guidelines, occur in the protected area:
- Birds: kingfisher , red-backed shrike , black woodpecker , reed warbler , woodcock and honey buzzard
- Amphibians: fire salamander , crested newt , moor frog and sea frog
- Reptiles: adder, smooth snake, grass snake and sand lizard
