The Rhine foothills east of Wallach is a 325 hectare wide nature reserve in the area of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Rheinberg on Niederrhein . It is located on the left bank of the Rhine in the Rheinberg district of Wallach . In the south, outside the nature reserve, is the Rheinberg district of Ossenberg , in the north of the Wesel district of Büderich . The nature reserve is almost entirely located in the much larger EU bird reserve DE-4203-401 Unterer Niederrhein , which means that these areas belong to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

Flora and fauna

In today's nature reserve, flat grassland areas were created on predominantly impermeable subsoil by gravel and extensive filling with industrial waste . After heavy rainfall and the Rhine floods, extensive still waters form there , which are suitable as a habitat and resting place for waders and water birds . During the breeding season, the area is particularly important during wet years. The most important protection goals include the preservation of the extensively agriculturally used wet meadows , the restoration of the shallow water zones in the Rheinaue and the permanent protection of the sand martin colony that lives here .

Species of common interest according to the fauna, flora, habitat and bird protection directives are found in the nature reserves in particular

• White-fronted Geese , shelduck , gray geese , spoonbills , Egyptian Geese and Wigeon
• Curlews , ruff , redshank and black godwit
• Avocets
• Sheep stilts and meadow pipit
• Sand martins
• Corncracks
• Horsetail and shaggy rattle pots
