location

The area lies in the transition area between Münsterland and the Lower Rhine and extends primarily over extensively used fresh, moist to wet grassland . These are structured by field trees and hedge structures and are particularly valuable as a habitat for several endangered bird species.

The area comprises part of the larger cultural landscape of Dingdener Heide, which is characterized by centuries of rural land use and to which other surrounding areas belong. The core area of the nature reserve is also known as the Große Dingdener Heide . Areas directly to the north in Rhede (Borken district) are located in the NSG Büngernsche and Dingdener Heide . A short distance to the west, there is the NSG Kleine Dingdener Heide , in which there are also wet heathland areas . Other areas of the Dingdener Heide lie v. a. in protected landscape areas .

Flora and fauna

In the more wetted areas of the NSG there are some shallow pools and other areas are at least temporarily under water. There are flood grass and reed canary grass - reed beds before. In addition to several rare types of sedges , the marsh marsh whale also grows in some places . There are small areas of scrambled forest along rivers in the area . The ponds are important for amphibians as spawning grounds , for dragonflies and for waders and water birds .

The endangered bird species that breed in the area include redshank , black-tailed godwit , oystercatcher , meadow pipit , common snipe , curlew , little ringed plover , lapwing , quail , wagtail , teal , red- backed killer , tree falcon and little owl . Other species use the area as a resting place and feeding place (especially winter visitors and migrants ), B. golden plover , wood sandpiper , spoonbill , white-fronted goose , hen harrier and the black stork .

From an ornithological point of view, the nature reserve is of national importance. Overall, it is also classified as important for the regional and state-wide biotope network .

tourism

Several roads and paths lead through the area, from which views of the fenced grassland areas are possible. A viewing pulpit is roughly in the middle of the NSG, a little off the road to the Venn, east of the Büngerner Heide junction .

On the western edge of the area there is a scenic circular hiking trail , which is advertised as "Dingdener Heide - history of a cultural landscape". It essentially runs through three neighboring protected areas, u. a. by the NSG Kleine Dingdener Heide , and goes back to a funding project of the NRW Foundation and the NABU , within the framework of which various historical forms of the rural cultural landscape are reconstructed, maintained and made tangible. A wet grassland area in the western part of the nature reserve is part of the project area and is developed as a "time window grassland" with a viewpoint and information board. The cabaret artist Wendelin Haverkamp has been campaigning for the NRW Foundation since 1994 as a project sponsor for Dingdener Heide. The supervisor of the cultural landscape project is the biological station in the Wesel district, which also looks after the Dingdener Heide NSG.
