The Rabbit Mountains are a nature reserve of around 106 hectares in the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality of Hünxe on the Lower Rhine . As part of the forest "Speller Heide" is the 1989 furnished nature reserve between the Hünxer district Bucholtwelmen and Voerder district Friedrichsfeld . Since 2004 the Rabbit Mountains have also been designated as FFH area DE-4306-303 Rabbit Mountains , which makes them part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . The FFH area is only slightly smaller than the nature reserve; Two marginal areas in the northwest of the area are left out.

Flora and fauna

The Rabbit Mountains encompass an inland dune field with remnants of former heathland . About 90 percent of the area are predominantly middle-aged pine - mixed forests and sometimes very young deciduous forests of oaks and birches were, and especially parts of birch stands heather rich have undergrowth.
