Twilight forest
The twilight forest is the general name for the approximately 1400 hectare large and contiguous forest area of the Wesel state forest in the municipality of Schermbeck in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Wesel .
Geographical location
The Twilight Forest lies on the bottom of the Schermbeck districts of Damm and Twilight Forest . It is located in the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland and sets in the east of the natural environment "Niederrheinische sand plates" located one of the few largely pristine and unfragmented forest areas represent.
Flora and fauna
In the central part of the area, the Twilight Forest has higher proportions of acidic oak and beech forests . Isolated standing dead wood offers breeding opportunities, especially for black woodpeckers . The undergrowth is characterized by bracken and pipe grass , locally also by sedges . Individual streams within the forest area have strongly meandering streams, some of which have been artificially deepened. Particularly in the edge zones of the Dusk Forest, smaller coniferous forests , individual grassland areas and isolated alder and birch stands were included in the nature reserve. There is a large population of red deer in the forest area .
Protection goals
In the twilight forest, a 210 is ha big Natura 2000 -Schutzgebiet. A central protection goal is the conversion of the coniferous forests into largely contiguous deciduous forests. The deciduous forests are to be managed naturally, with increased preservation of old and dead wood . The further development of the existing deciduous forests and the renaturation of the excessively deepened streams are also central. Species of community interest according to the fauna, flora, habitat and bird protection guidelines include, in particular, nightingales , black woodpeckers , oriole and wasp buzzards in the nature reserve . Furthermore, one encounters the threatened moor frog in the Twilight Forest.

The Dusk Forest is one of the most important local recreation areas in the Ruhr area . It has an extensive network of hiking trails and a half marathon route.
environment
- On October 3, 1966, the north-west oil pipeline tore and thousands of liters of mineral oil flowed into the forest. After days of use, the oil can be kept away from the lip .
