Local development

The first houses in Zang were probably built around 1500. Initiated by Abbot Melchior Ruff of the Cistercian monastery in Königsbronn , so-called Söldhofstätten were founded “ on the monastery’s own forests ” . These were simple dwellings with some arable land for the workers (mercenaries) who were dependent on the monastery. The first settlers were mainly forest workers and charcoalers who were supposed to supply the charcoal necessary for the monastery 's own iron smelting of floor ore . In the camp register of the monastery from 1538, 22 Söldhofstätten and their residents are named, who were obliged to lease the monastery and labor. A further 35 Söldhof sites were added by 1739. However, it was not until 1817 that the properties could be bought by their owners as part of a replacement ordered by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg . In order to be exempt from rent and labor, however, the payment of 16 times the annual amount was necessary. In the course of time, in addition to forestry , more and more livestock and arable farming (mostly grain and potatoes ) were operated. Especially in the 18th and 19th centuries there were also many weavers in the village.

In 1580 the Königsbronn monastery passed to the Duchy of Württemberg and Zang came to jump politically, the later Königsbronn. It was not until 1819 that the place became an independent municipality, which was incorporated back into Königsbronn on September 1, 1971 as part of the Baden-Württemberg municipal reform.

Since the late 1960s, more and more new residents have settled in Zang. This led to a significant increase in population, so that the new building area now houses the majority of the population. The population is now around 1500.

School system

School and town hall, built in 1835

Zang has had his own school since the end of the 17th century. On September 28, 1696, the “ local council and the whole community zu Zang ” felt compelled to address a “ humble petition ” to the government, “ to graciously consent to the reception of a particular schoolmaster ”. The reason given for the application was that the approx. 5 km long walk from Zang to the Königsbronn school could not be expected of " the tender youth " because of the " fearful forests ", the " cruel falling snow " and the " raging wolves " . The approved schoolmaster first had to teach in rented rooms. The poor community was only able to afford its own school building after a state-wide collection for the village ordered by the Württemberg government in 1826, which raised 1734 guilders. It was built in 1835 as a joint building with the town hall and is still used today for school lessons.

After a temporary closure in 1976, there has been a primary school in Zang again since 1987 , which will continue to be maintained through a referendum in January 2018, although the Königsbronn municipal council actually decided to close the branch again in 2017. In addition, there has been a local kindergarten since 1975 .

Attractions

Village church

The Protestant village church was built in 1781 instead of the 200-year-old predecessor church and, with its impressive coffered ceiling, is a building worth seeing. It was built by the church council builder Wilhelm Friedrich Goez from Ludwigsburg. The village church is a listed building and is one of the few church buildings in the region that is equipped with a solar power system (since 2007).

Village pond

The Zanger village pond was laid out as early as 1500 by the Königsbronn monks for fish farming and was later mainly used as a cattle trough. More recently, it has also become popular with ice skaters in winter, for whom the municipality has even installed a small floodlight system. Until the end of the 20th century, the pond was still an intact ecosystem with water lilies , tadpoles and frogs , and over time the pond became more and more algae , until in 2014 the inflow and the entire surrounding area was renovated and redesigned with the help of the Zanger population. On the waterfront, water now splashes from a cast-iron fountain and there is information about the historic Zang on a display board. In addition, benches invite you to relax.

The oldest traces of settlement in today's Zang district are in the western Flurmark Kerbenhof, where a sizeable estate was once managed for many centuries. As early as 1143, the name baskets appeared in the foundations of the Anhausen monastery and referred to a hamlet that was overgrown with wood. After several changes of ownership, the estate came to the Duchy of Württemberg in 1707, and after lengthy negotiations it was acquired by the citizens of Zanger in 1848, thus increasing the area by around 70 hectares. In the same year the homestead was demolished because it was in disrepair, so that nothing can be seen of the former development today. Only a small field envelope with a display board lined with bushes reminds of the historic settlement.

Surroundings

The wide forest clearing in which the still rural settlement is located is used by hikers and cyclists for local recreation, especially on weekends. Especially in the warmer months of the year, the Bänklesweg , a circular path around the village equipped by the Zanger Swabian Alb Association with a number of idyllic benches, invites you to take relaxing walks. In winter, the Zanger Loipe, known in the area, attracts extensive cross-country tours.

politics

As part of Königsbronn, Zang is in the Bundestag constituency 270 Aalen-Heidenheim.
