Heathland of the Aaper Vennekes

The Aaper Vennekes are largely wooded heather and moorland areas on the outskirts of Wesel in the Drevenacker Dünen nature reserve .

Two sub-areas, which together cover about 45 hectares , are recorded in the biotope register of North Rhine-Westphalia as NSG Aaper Vennekes under the identifier BK 4305-160. The part of the name “NSG” in the biotope register refers to the former nature reserve Aaper Vennekes ; this comprised around 75 hectares and merged in 2009 in the significantly larger NSG Drevenacker Dünen. The Aaper Vennekes are also located in the FFH area DE-4306-302 NSG complex In the Drevenacker Dunes, with an extension . This makes them part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

Geography and Landforms

The Aaper Vennekes are north of the Lippe and its floodplains and near the Wesel district of Wittenberg with the RWE road there. It is a predominantly wooded area up to three meters high inland dunes , between which there are depressions. The area is characterized by a nutrient-poor soil with a few heather bogs as well as heather areas and areas with sandy grasslands . The landscape was created in the Middle Ages when the soil was deprived of nutrients through human use.

The first part of the name is derived from the nearby Aaper Höfe. The word Vennekes describes a large number of small moors. In the past, the area was also referred to as " Obrighovener vulgarity", which indicates the communal use by farmers in the area.

Flora and fauna

In the Aaper Vennekes there are bog forests, which consist mainly of birch . Pine trees also make up an important part of the tree population. Heather , among other things, grows in areas with low vegetation . Even Erica tetralix occurs. Other plants that occur are sundew , brown schnabelried and swamp bear moss . Since around 1990, targeted interventions have been carried out to preserve the heathland in order to protect the habitat of the animal and plant species that are common there. Among other things, a flock of sheep is allowed into the area in the summer months because this can prevent excessive vegetation.

The animal species found include sand-loving insects, including field crickets and ant lions . The bird species woodlark can also occur in the Aaper Vennekes.
