The Niederrhein power plant is a former coal -fired steam power plant in Wesel - Obrighoven an der Lippe near the confluence with the northern Lower Rhine .

history

The plant was built by RWE in 1910 and was one of the first power plants in North Rhine-Westphalia. The electrification of the Lower Rhine region was significantly advanced through the construction . Bernhard Goldenberg , Technical Director at RWE, designed the power plant to be easily accessible and connected to the port in order to enable the coal to be delivered inexpensively by barge.

The power plant went into operation in 1911 with two steam turbines with an electrical output of 10 megawatts; In 1913 a third turbine with a further 5 MW was added. The three associated steam boilers came from Hanomag , Babcock & Wilcox and Petry-Dereux . A special feature of the work was a water container that was attached about halfway up the 100 meter high chimney.

The power plant survived the Second World War undamaged; it was only shut down after it was badly damaged by a deflagration in the coal bunker in 1946 . Since a repair was not worthwhile, the still functional machines and devices were dismantled as a reparation payment . The buildings remained standing for a long time afterwards and were only demolished from 1972 - beginning with the blowing up of the chimney.

Today only the Niederrhein substation is a reminder of the former power station location.
