Edmund Duckwitz (born March 8, 1949 in Bremen ) is a former German diplomat and was German ambassador to Mexico from October 2010 to July 2014 . From 2007 to August 2010 he was permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels.

Life

In 1967 Duckwitz obtained the general higher education entrance qualification at the Hermann-Böse-Gymnasium , before he did his military service from 1967 to 1968 and also completed the two-year training as a reserve lieutenant there. He then studied law from 1969 to 1973 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the University of Geneva , graduating in 1973 with the first state examination in law. This was followed by the legal clerkship (1974–1976). At the same time he worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. After writing his dissertation under the title Legal Consequences of Violation of International Treaties , he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD.

In 1976 he took his second state examination in law, and in the same year he entered the preparatory service for the higher foreign service . From 1978 to 1981 he worked at the embassy in Belgrade and from 1981 to 1985 at the Foreign Office . From 1985 to 1989 he was Deputy Ambassador in Manila and from 1989 to 1992 at the Foreign Office, where he was the deputy head of a unit in the Economic and European Department. In 1992 he was appointed ambassador to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic , whose office he held for 4 years. From 1996 to 1999 he was Deputy Head of the Department for Foreign, Security and Development Policy at the Federal Chancellery in Bonn. From 1999 to 2001 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic in Caracas in Venezuela , from 2001 to 2006 Ambassador in The Hague in the Netherlands , from 2006 to August 2007 permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to NATO and from August 2007 to August 2010 permanent representative of the Federal Republic Germany at the European Union in Brussels.

In October 2010 he became Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mexico and remained in this position until he retired in July 2014. His successor was then Viktor Elbling in August 2014 , who was previously Head of the Department for Economics and Sustainable Development at the German Foreign Office was.

Duckwitz is married and has three children. His second uncle is the former diplomat Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz (1904–1973). Duckwitz sees himself following his uncle's foreign policy tradition.
