Viktor Elbling

Viktor Elbling (born April 4, 1959 in Karachi ) is a German diplomat . He has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Italy since 2018 .

Life

Elbling completed parts of his school education in Forlì in Emilia-Romagna and at the German School in Milan . After graduating from the German School in Bilbao , he began studying law in 1978 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , which he completed in 1984 with the first state examination in law. In addition to his legal clerkship , he also completed postgraduate studies in political science and Romance studies between 1984 and 1987 and passed the second state examination in 1987.

In 1988 Elbling began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after its graduation was initially at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn between 1989 and 1990 and then from 1990 to 1993 policy advisor at the embassy in South Korea . This was followed by various posts in the Foreign Office, initially as an advisor in the ministerial office and finally until 1998 as personal advisor to Federal Minister Klaus Kinkel , before he was deputy head of the ministerial office of Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer between 1998 and 1999 .

Elbling then acted as head of the economic services at the embassy in Spain from 1999 to 2003 , before returning to the Foreign Office and initially head of the International Economic and Financial Policy Department between 2003 and 2006 and then from 2006 to 2010 the globalization, energy and climate policy before he finally acted as head of the Department for Economics and Sustainable Development at the Federal Foreign Office between 2010 and 2014.

In August 2014, Elbling succeeded the retired Edmund Duckwitz as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mexico . In September 2018 Elbling took over the post of ambassador in Rome from Susanne Wasum-Rainer .
