Susanne Marianne Wasum-Rainer (born July 31, 1956 in Mainz ) is a German diplomat and ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Israel . Before that she was the German ambassador to Italy and France .

Life

Susanne Wasum-Rainer is the daughter of Brigitte Wasum (née Zwicknagl, a sister of Marianne Strauss ) and the winery and champagne cellar owner Wilhelm Wasum. After graduating from high school in 1975, she began studying law at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and later at the University of Passau and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and passed her first state examination in 1981 and her second state examination in 1984 . In 1983 she received her doctorate as Dr. iur. at the University of Passau with a dissertation on the subject of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the system of compulsory dispute settlement procedures of the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Until 1986 she worked for the Science and Politics Foundation .

Susanne Wasum-Rainer is widowed and has a daughter.

career

Wasum-Rainer joined the senior foreign service in 1986 . After completing her training as an attaché and completing her career test, she was initially employed at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn from 1987 to 1989 and then at the embassy in Morocco . After being used again at the headquarters of the Foreign Office from 1991 to 1993, she worked at the embassy in Israel and then until 1997 at the permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva . In 2000, Susanne Wasum-Rainer returned to the Foreign Office and was initially a consultant, then head of department in 2002 and a representative in 2006. Most recently, between 2009 and 2012, she was head of the legal department of the Federal Foreign Office and international law advisor to the federal government.

From 2012 to 2015 Susanne Wasum-Rainer was the German ambassador to France . In late autumn 2012 - on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Contract - she succeeded in getting the United Buddy Bears project to be present for six weeks on the Champ de Mars , at the foot of the Eiffel Tower . The exhibition in Paris served to underline the good relations between France and Germany and between Paris and Berlin.

From July 2015 to September 2018, Susanne Wasum-Rainer was the German ambassador to Italy and San Marino . She has been ambassador to Israel since September 2018 ; Wasum-Rainer speaks Hebrew. In Paris, Rome and Tel Aviv she became the first woman to take over the management of the respective embassy.
