Reinhard Schäfers

Reinhard Schäfers (born May 27, 1950 ) is a German diplomat . He was ambassador to Italy until 2015 , is married and has two children.

education

Reinhard Schäfers studied law and passed his first state examination in 1972 and his second state examination in 1975 . From 1975 to 1976 he was an intern at the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in Paris and began training in the higher foreign service in 1977 .

Professional background

In 1979 he was appointed second secretary in the economic department of the Foreign Office and from 1979 to 1982 he was consul at the German embassy in Prague , then the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic . From 1982 to 1985 he was employed as a permanent representative at the German embassy in Mogadishu . From 1985 to 1988 he was a consultant in the Federal Chancellery for East-West issues, disarmament and security policy. From 1988 to 1991 Schäfers was Counselor at the German Embassy in Moscow and responsible for German-Soviet relations and foreign and security policy. In 1991/92 he worked in the Foreign Office in the Soviet Union and from 1992 to 1998 he was head of the Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe department in the Federal Chancellery under Helmut Kohl . From 1998 he was envoy at the German embassy in Paris and in 2000 was appointed ambassador and permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Western European Union. From 2001 Schäfers was Ambassador and representative of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Political and Security Committee of the EU and from 2006 Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kiev . From August 2008 to 2012 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Paris. His successor in Paris and 2015 in Rome was Susanne Wasum-Rainer .
