Michael Gerdts (2010)

Michael H. Gerdts (born August 18, 1947 in Bochum ) is a retired German diplomat . He was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Italy and San Marino from 2004 to 2007 and again between July 2010 and August 2012 . In the meantime he was German ambassador to Poland from 2007 to 2010 .

Life

Michael Gerdts studied economics and social sciences at the University of Cologne and Pennsylvania State University , USA.

After joining the Foreign Service in 1980, he was employed as a member of the German delegation to the UNCD in Geneva and New York as well as in the planning staff of the Foreign Office.

From 1988 to 1993 he was personal advisor and deputy head of the ministerial office of the federal foreign ministers Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Klaus Kinkel . He then succeeded Hanns Heinrich Schumacher as press spokesman for the Foreign Office until 1995.

In 1995 Michael Gerdts became Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kenya and from 1999 to 2002 he became Ministerial Director and Deputy Head of the Department for Global Issues, United Nations, Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid (GF Department) of the Federal Foreign Office.

He was Head of Department 4 (Foreign Department) of the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government from 2002 to 2003 and, after this department was transferred to the Foreign Office in March 2003, Head of the Department for Communication, Public Relations and Media (Department K) of the Foreign Office until 2004, 2004–2007 German ambassador to Italy, 2007–2010 German ambassador to Poland, 2010–2012 again German ambassador to Italy.
