Wilhelm Schönfelder
Wilhelm Heinrich Schönfelder (born November 12, 1940 in Marburg ) is a former lobbyist for Siemens at the EU and previously one of the highest-ranking German diplomats .
Life
After graduating from high school, he began studying economics in 1962 and was awarded his doctorate on medieval city history in 1970, parallel to his traineeship training as a study assessor.
In 1971 he joined the Foreign Service and worked in Paris, Kabul and Washington. In 1985 he became Deputy Head of the USA Department in the Foreign Office , and from 1986 to 1991 Schönfelder was Head of Department for German, European and international currency and financial issues. Since 1992 he has been a sub-department head for West / East economic relations, foreign trade promotion and export control issues, and since 1993 he has been responsible for the European department, of which he became department head in 1994.
In September 1999 he was appointed permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels as the successor to Dietrich von Kyaw . His activity was extended beyond retirement in order to maintain continuity and ended on June 30, 2007 with the end of the German EU presidency.
From 2007 to 2010 he was head of the Siemens representation at the EU in Brussels.
