Peter Tempel (born April 13, 1955 ) is a German diplomat . From 2014 to 2018 he was the German ambassador to Spain . He has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mexico since 2018 .

Life

Tempel earned a graduate degree in psychology and social sciences . Between 1983 and 1985 he completed his training for the higher service at the Foreign Office and completed a postgraduate course in economics , international law and history .

From 1985 to 1986 he was legation secretary at the Foreign Office in Bonn. This was followed by his first assignment abroad until 1989 at the German embassy in Washington, DC as a legation counselor in the economic department. Until 1991 he worked as permanent representative and first class councilor at the embassy in Bamako , then until 1993 as a lecturing councilor in the European department of the Foreign Office in Bonn. From 1993 to 1997, Tempel was Counselor at the Permanent Mission to the European Union in Brussels and from 1997 to 1998 he was a lecturer in the European Department of the Foreign Office.

In 1998, Tempel was appointed office manager of the Minister of State responsible for European issues in the Foreign Office. From 1999 to 2002 Tempel was deputy head of cabinet and from 2002 to 2004 he was cabinet head of Günter Verheugen , EU commissioner for enlargement in the Prodi Commission . From 2004 to 2006 he was also the head of Verheugen's cabinet in the Barroso I Commission , with the Enterprise and Industry department. From 2006 to July 2010, Tempel headed the European department at the Foreign Office in Berlin.

From August 2010 to 2014 he was the German Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels . In summer 2014 he changed office with Reinhard Silberberg and became German ambassador in Madrid , where he stayed until September 2018.

He has been the German ambassador to Mexico since September 2018 . His wife, Heidrun Tempel , has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cuba since 2019 .
