Wolfgang Hermann Dold (born April 20, 1958 in Arlington , Virginia , USA ) is a German diplomat. From 2012 to 2014 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Greece and until 2018 headed the central department at the Foreign Office in Berlin . He has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Spain since 2018 .

Life

Dold studied law. He completed his legal training in 1986 with the second state examination in law. In 1988 he joined the Foreign Service . Dold is married and has three children.

career

From 1990 to 1994 he was the permanent representative of the ambassador to the German embassy in Kathmandu , Nepal . He then worked at the Foreign Office in Berlin in the personnel department for the higher service , from 1997 to 2000 at the embassy in Tel Aviv , Israel as a political advisor. In 2000 he returned to the personnel department. From 2003 to 2006 he went to the embassy in Pretoria , South Africa as permanent representative . He then worked for six years in the Federal Foreign Office, initially as head of the department for general personnel matters and then from 2009 to 2012 as budget officer and infrastructure officer.

In March 2012, at a time when German-Greek relations had entered a difficult phase as a result of the Greek financial crisis and its reporting, he was appointed ambassador to Athens , Greece . His successor, accredited in 2014, is Peter Schoof . From 2014 to 2018, Dold headed the central department of the Foreign Office in Berlin as Ministerial Director . He has been Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin since 2015 and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Spain since September 2018 .
