Roland Michael Wegener (born December 13, 1947 in Ulm ) is a former German diplomat who was, among other things, Head of the Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg , Ambassador to Mexico and, most recently, Ambassador to Greece .

Life

Roland Wegener studied law and political science as well as economics and received his doctorate from the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 1977 as a Dr. iur. with a dissertation on the state and associations in the field of welfare: a study on the relationship between state, church and society in the political community .

After joining the Foreign Service in 1975, he was employed at the embassy in Poland and at the Foreign Office. Between 1984 and 1989 he was a research assistant in the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . Subsequently, he was head of cabinet of the Secretary General of NATO , Manfred Wörner, until 1993 . From 1993 to 1997 he was head of the "European Security and Defense" department at the Foreign Office in Bonn. In 1997 Wegener became Deputy Secretary General of the Western European Union ( WEU ).

From 2001 to August 2006, Wegener headed the German Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. He was then the German ambassador to Mexico until 2010 . Wegener was ambassador to Greece from September 2010 to March 2012 and then retired . The successor as ambassador was Wolfgang Dold , who was previously responsible for infrastructure at the Foreign Office.
