The former RWE Rhein-Ruhr AG was the legal successor of RWE Energie AG , which comprised the entire electricity business of the RWE Group from the establishment of the RWE AG holding company in 1990 until the merger with VEW 2000.

RWE Rhein-Ruhr AG was a subsidiary of RWE Energy AG in the area from Wesel to Bad Kreuznach and from Düren to Siegen with its headquarters in Essen . It supplied 2,670,000 customers with electricity, 348,000 with gas and 225,000 with water.

The former RWE Rhein-Ruhr employed around 7,100 people and around 750 trainees, and in 2004 generated sales of around EUR 5.8 billion.

On September 1, 2009, RWE Rhein-Ruhr AG was renamed RWE Rheinland Westfalen Netz AG . The sales business was spun off to RWE Vertrieb AG and the network business of the dissolved RWE Westfalen-Weser-Ems AG was taken over. The intermediate holding company RWE Energy AG ceased to exist during this restructuring.

On December 2, 2010, the general assembly of RWE Rheinland Westfalen Netz AG decided to rename the company to RWE Deutschland AG .

Holdings

The former RWE Rhein-Ruhr AG and today's RWE Deutschland AG has majority stakes in several energy suppliers as well as subsidiaries that take over the supply in subregions.

The company holds, among other things, a 67 percent stake in rhenag Rheinische Energie AG and 79% of the shares in ELE Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH .

In addition, the company has a minority stake in several municipal utilities.
