history

It all started when British Rail was privatized in 1994. As a result of the privatization, all of British Rail's rolling stock was sold to rolling stock companies. The locomotives were then leased to other railway companies by the three resulting companies, Angel Trains , Porterbrook and Eversholt Rail. In 1999 the company Angel Trains International was founded, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Angel Trains, which takes care of development outside the UK. The first office outside the UK was opened by Angel Trains International in 2001 in Antwerp, which is responsible for locomotive rental. A year later, in 2002, another office was opened in Cologne, which is responsible for the rental of locomotives for passenger transport in continental Europe.

In August 2008, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) sold Angel Trains to a consortium of two funds originally operated by Babcock & Brown , AMP Capital , Deutsche Bank and the like. a. completed. When it was sold, all rail vehicles under construction that had not yet been delivered were left in the property of RBS. Since 2009 the shareholders of Alpha Trains are:

  • Arcus Infrastructure Partners
  • AMP Capital
  • PSP Investments

Since then, Angel Trains International has been operating independently of the British division.

In December 2009 the independent company was renamed Alpha Trains. The Antwerp-based company was baptized under the name Alpha Trains (Locomotives) . The location in Cologne has been called Alpha Trains Europa GmbH since 2002 . In the years 2012 to 2016, the company bought the remaining locomotives and railcars from RBS. Alpha Trains also bought modern railcars for passenger transport by 2015 . The total fleet of vehicles at that time was worth 1.5 billion euros.

In 2016, the company managed to refinance around EUR 600 million for the first time, partly through the US private placement market. Meanwhile, Alpha Trains completed the first private placement in the rail industry. In the same year, the company bought 89 more trains to expand. A short time later, in 2017, the company bought 13 modern Flirt railcars intended for use on the Teutoburg Forest and Hellweg networks . In addition, Alpha Trains ordered ten Siemens Vectron locomotives and six additional Euro 4000 diesel locomotives from the manufacturer Stadler (formerly Vossloh ). As of 2017, the total fleet has a value of over 2.5 billion euros.
