Siemens Vectron
The Siemens Vectron is a vehicle from the locomotive family of the German rail vehicle manufacturer Siemens Mobility , which replaces the EuroSprinter -Elektrolok- and the diesel-electric EuroRunner -families or their further development Siemens ES 2007 . Both electric locomotives and diesel-electric locomotives will again be built on the platform . The series designations for the various Vectron variants in Germany are 6191 to 6193 for the electric or 1247 for the diesel-electric and 2248 for the dual-mode variant and are already in use. The price of a Vectron is between three and five million euros, depending on the equipment (diesel / electric / multi-system version).
By the beginning of May 2020, 1003 Vectron locomotives had been sold to 49 customers. At the time, the delivered locomotives had covered more than 300 million fleet kilometers.
Awards
The Siemens Vectron was awarded the innovation prize of the Privatbahn Magazin in 2010/2011 .
history
Siemens Mobility presented the new Vectron product family on June 29, 2010 in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center as the successor to the EuroSprinter platform, but only as an electric locomotive at that time. At the Innotrans 2010, Siemens presented a diesel variant called Vectron DE .
In March 2018, Siemens presented a non-configurable, cheaper version of the locomotive for the German market under the name Smartron .
The Vectron dual-mode locomotive was presented at Innotrans 2018, and the first locomotive (248 001) was presented to the public in March 2019. The two-power locomotive also replaces the Vectron DE, which is being discontinued due to lack of demand.
At the end of 2019, the Vectron was approved for ETCS operation with Baseline 3 in Germany.
technical description
The external design of the Vectron locomotives differs only slightly from that of the Siemens ES 2007; in particular, the head module corresponding to the crash standard is adopted, with the exception of a few detailed changes, such as a rear view camera instead of side windows. Inside, however, the new type has a fundamentally different structure. In contrast to the Bombardier Traxx, the engine room has a straight central aisle, on the sides of which all components have a fixed place. The control lines and compressed air pipes run in a channel below the floor. The wheel sets are driven via spring-loaded hollow pinion shafts. The bogies are guided in the Maffei tradition and comparable to the predecessor types by means of powerfully constructed pivot pins with a rectangular cross-section that extend far down. It transfers all forces in the longitudinal and transverse direction. The cross member required for this in the bogie frame is the reason for the larger bogie axle stands compared to the Bombardier Traxx locomotives . The bogie frames correspond to those of the predecessors ES64U2 (ÖBB 1016, 1116, DB 182), ES64U4 (ÖBB 1216 and identical) and despite the smaller wheel diameters of the ES64F4 (DB 189). In contrast to the Taurus variants, however, the »high-performance drive with spring-loaded brake shaft« (HAB) was dispensed with, and in contrast to the ES64F4, the installation space required for it was not kept free. This is externally recognizable by the wheel disc brakes made possible with it. The bogies for the broad gauge are designed in such a way that wheel sets with a gauge of up to 1676 mm can be installed.
The operating mass of the four-axle locomotive is between 80 and 90 tons, depending on the version. The car bodies are prepared for the installation of the UIC central buffer couplings and comparable couplings at European heights. The possibility was used for the first time with the locomotives of the VR series Sr3 for Finland. Vectron locomotives can be equipped with all national train control systems as well as ETCS required in Europe. The driver's seat for all locomotives is on the right in the direction of travel.
Initially, four electric and one diesel-electric version of the locomotive platform were developed without a customer order. A two-power locomotive was also presented in 2018 . The variants are:
- Vectron MS: multi-system locomotive with 6400 kW (~) / 6000 kW (3rd kV =) / 3500 kW (1.5 kV =) power and 160 or 200 km / h top speed
- Vectron AC high power : AC locomotive with 6400 kW power and 160 or 200 km / h top speed (German series designation 193)
- Vectron AC medium power : AC locomotive with 5600 kW power and 160 km / h top speed
- Vectron DC medium power : DC locomotive with 5200 kW power and 160 or 200 km / h top speed (German series designation 191)
- Vectron DE: diesel-electric locomotive with 2400 kW power and 160 km / h top speed (German series designation 247)
- Vectron DM: Two-power locomotive (dual mode) for 15 kV AC voltage and a diesel engine with 2000 kW power on the bike and 160 km / h top speed (German series designation 248).
The electric locomotives are basically on 160 km / h designed. Some versions (as stated above) can be upgraded to 200 km / h can be upgraded.
Another upgrade option is the optional routing module that can be built into the Vectron AC and DC. It contains an auxiliary diesel engine with 180 kW output (exhaust gas values according to EU standard IIIb), with which currentless tracks can be used in shunting services (e.g. to operate track connections without shunting assistance).
The Vectron DE is the diesel locomotive of the product family. It has two side aisles, is about a meter longer than the electric locomotives and the wheel diameters and bogie axles are slightly smaller. The sixteen-cylinder V-engine from MTU 16V 4000 R84 already complies with EU standard IIIB with its exhaust emissions.
The Finnish broad gauge locomotives have the same dimensions of the locomotive body as the standard gauge versions, but they have a raised fan section for sufficient cooling when the ventilation grilles are iced up. They also have a few other special features: a modified front face with an impact shield, driver's cab side window with mirror, a step bead between the front front and driver's cab door instead of a separate ladder and couplings for the UIC cable installed next to the coupling sockets of the train busbar . The installation spaces for the UIC line in the standard version, which are also available because of the uniform car bodies, are blindly closed. The machines are delivered with central buffer couplings in "Unilink" design with an integrated coupling chain and additional side buffers.
The Siemens Charger (DE) and Amtrak Cities Sprinter (AC) are based on the Vectron platform. They are built for the American market in the Siemens Mobility plant in Sacramento / California. Both types are for 200 km / h top speed.

Competitor
The two most important competitors on the market are Bombardier with the TRAXX family and Alstom with the Prima family. The manufacturers Stadler (formerly Vossloh ) with the Euro4000 / Eurodual series and Škoda with the 109E series play a smaller role in terms of quantity, but with a similar modular structure and areas of application . Newer Polish developments are the Pesa Gama and Newag Griffin locomotives . All have similar modular concepts in which a single locomotive body can be used for all variants - both freight and passenger transport and both diesel and electric locomotives.
Approvals
Country approvals, which cannot be clearly assigned to the locomotive variant, were assumed on the basis of a comparative analysis of the surrounding countries and the traction current systems and are in brackets in the following list.
The multi-system variant is approved in Germany for multiple traction, both type-specific with other Vectron locomotives and in a mixed network with locomotives of the series 120 , 152 (ES64F) , 182 (ES64U2) and 189 (ES64F4) . Both the time-division multiplex double traction control (ZDS) and the time-division multiple traction control (ZMS), both variants of the time-division multiplex push-pull train control (ZWS) , can be used.
