history

At the end of January 2017, the Austrian Federal Railways and Siemens Mobility signed a framework agreement for up to 200 locomotives, of which the first 30 multi-system Vectron were called up directly at a total price of 120 million euros. When the tender was announced at the end of 2015, the order volume was 570 million euros. According to the agreement, up to 100 alternating current locomotives (AC), 50 alternating current locomotives with an additional diesel generator for the shunting service and 50 multi-system locomotives (MS) can be called up by the ÖBB . The vehicles are manufactured in the Siemens factory in Munich, the locomotive bogies are supplied from the Siemens factory in Graz. The delivery of the first vehicles began in mid-2018.

After the approval for Italy was granted, another 17 locomotives were requested. The last of these 47 locomotives, the 1293 047, has been in service since May 2019.

In March 2019, ÖBB ordered a further 61 machines. 28 of them should also be usable in the Netherlands and Belgium. The first machine of this third order has been in operation since January 2020. In addition to replacing rental locomotives with our own, the delivery of the Vectron locomotives further reduced the number of series 1142 and 1144 .

technology

The Siemens Vectron have an output of 6400 kW when operated with alternating voltage, 6000 kW with direct voltage and have a mass of up to 90 tons, which results in an axle load of 22.5 tons distributed over four axles. The maximum permissible speed of 200 km / h could be increased to 230 km / h for use with passenger trains.

commitment

Mainly the 1293 should be used at the freight subsidiary Rail Cargo Austria (RCA) and thus enable freight traffic across borders and with different overhead line voltages and train control devices .

In 2019 and 2020, the 1216 series locomotives were largely displaced by foreign deployments to Italy and the Czech Republic, and most of the rental locomotives were returned. These operations start from Innsbruck, Villach and Vienna.
