Railpool , based in Munich, is a leasing company for locomotives and rail vehicles for freight and passenger transport that is active in 14 European countries.
background
Railpool is mainly active in the field of short to medium-term rental of locomotives (so-called operating leases ) - the company offers so-called full service packages with additional services such as maintenance, repair, provision of replacement vehicles in the event of failure, etc. Railpool was founded in 2008 by KfW IPEX-Bank and HSH Nordbank , each of which was 50% shareholders. In May 2012 the shareholders announced that they wanted to sell Railpool; In May 2014 it was announced that the private equity investor Oaktree had taken over 100% of the shares.
Since the purchase by Oaktree, Railpool Bidco GmbH Co. KG has been the highest group holding company in Germany; the operative business is carried out by Railpool GmbH.
vehicles
Railpool has a fleet of over 400 electric locomotives. The company leases modern electric locomotives of the 185 series (Bombardier Traxx F140 AC2) , 186 (Traxx F140 MS) and the 193 series (Siemens Vectron) . Railpool was Vectron's first customer ; after these were ordered from the manufacturer Siemens at the end of 2010, the first locomotives were delivered in November 2012. The leasing company is also the first and, with 30 locomotives, the largest buyer of the 187 series (Traxx 3) , which are also in the vehicle fleet. Another 20 locomotives of this series worth 74 million euros are to be delivered in the second half of 2019. Railpool thus also owns the largest Bombardier fleet: a total of 217 locomotives belong to the Bombardier Traxx family . Early 2017 bought Rail pool along with Toshiba of DB Cargo 130 locomotives of the series 151 and 155 from. The locomotives were produced from 1972 to 1978 (series 151) and 1977–1984 (155). Due to the outdated technology, DB Cargo no longer wanted to own these locomotives. For this reason, DB Cargo rented 100 locomotives back from Railpool. Maintenance and servicing will continue to be handled by Deutsche Bahn. Railpool leases the remaining 30 locomotives of the 151 and 155 series to other railway companies. By 2018, 900 million euros had been put into the fleet of 400 electric locomotives.
The Railpool fleet can be recognized quickly by its color. All locomotives, with the exception of the purchased locomotives of the class 151 and 155, run in a silver color dress with a blue banner on each side of the vehicle. The series 151 and 155 run in the typical traffic red color used by Deutsche Bahn with stripes in daylight gray. Since the purchased locomotives are no longer the property of Deutsche Bahn, only the DB logo has been removed. In September 2018, the first class 155 locomotive (155 138-1) was repainted in the typical Railpool color scheme.
