The EURO 4000 is a diesel-electric locomotive produced by Stadler Rail (until 2015: Vossloh ) at the Albuixech plant near Valencia in Spain. Around 50 of the locomotive had been delivered to eight countries by the end of 2011.

history

The Vossloh EURO 4000 was developed in close cooperation with the American company Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. at a time when the Spanish factory was still part of Alstom . When Vossloh bought this plant in 2004, the engine was practically fully developed. Similarities in technology and sometimes optics to older Alstom products such as JT 42BW, JT 42CW or JT 42HW-HS are obvious.

Two different versions of the EURO 4000 have been designed: one for passenger and one for goods traffic. The passenger train variant can reach a top speed of 160 km / h. The locomotive weighs 123 tons and has an axle load of 20.5 tons. So far, only the freight version has been built. In Spain the locomotive is referred to as the 335 series, in Sweden it is referred to as the T68 and in Portugal as the 6001 series , where it is used by Takargo Rail .

In addition to the Euro 4000, there is also a type known as the Euro 3000 with 2,390 kW (3250 PS) and only 4 axles, which reaches a top speed of 200 km / h. The 28 locomotives of this type built between 2006 and 2008, classified in Spain as the 334 series, were made using parts from the Renfe 333.0 and 319.3 series . For this purpose, Vossloh took over 28 old locomotives from Renfe, of which the train protection, the main generator and the alternator were still used. The Euro 3000 are used for passenger transport on the Madrid - Murcia route . Another 15 of these locomotives will be delivered to Israel Railways (ISR) from 2012 . Both types were presented at InnoTrans in 2006.

The first Euro 4000 was built in 2006 and exhibited in Vossloh paintwork at InnoTrans. Afterwards some tests were carried out on various German routes before the locomotive was sent back to Spain and later delivered to Angel Trains Cargo (ATC). The locomotive received its approval for the Spanish network in July 2008. It was also approved for Sweden in 2008. Approval drives for Germany, Belgium and France began in 2009. Approval for France by the Etablissement Public de Sécurité Ferroviaire (EPSF) took place on February 1, 2010.

On January 29, 2015, Vossloh España announced orders from France for 12 Euro 4000 locomotives. VFLI, a subsidiary of SNCF , ordered 2 locomotives directly and another 6 via Beacon Rail Leasing. Europorte has ordered 4 locomotives. According to Vossloh, more than 130 locomotives have been sold.

In 2015 Vossloh sold its factory in Valencia to Stadler Rail , and the locomotive has been sold as Stadler EURO4000 ever since .

commitment

The leasing company Angel Trains International ordered 18 of these locomotives in Iberian broad gauge for the Spanish market and 12 for use in Germany, Belgium and France. The order was later modified and a total of 24 broad gauge locomotives were delivered. The first locomotives with D / B / F equipment went instead to the leasing company Beacon Rail, which is owned by the Bank of Tokyo and the Japanese Mitsubishi . This company had previously ordered 6 locomotives for use in Norway. VFLI has ordered six locomotives through Beacon Rail; the first locomotives have been in service since 2012.

The first private provider in Portugal, Takargo Rail , has ordered 14 locomotives from Vossloh for cross-border traffic between Portugal and Spain, seven of which have been delivered.

In addition to Spain and Portugal, the Euro 4000 is also used in freight transport in France, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Norway. The first order and delivery to Israel took place in 2011.

technology

The locomotive is powered by a V16 two-stroke diesel engine of the type EMD 16-710 G3C-U2. With a tank capacity of 7,000 liters, distances of up to 2,000 kilometers can be covered without stopping. The use of a multiple traction is possible.
