The Prima is a family of locomotives from the French manufacturer Alstom . At first only electric locomotives belonged to this family, from 2006 onwards it was supplemented by a diesel locomotive developed jointly with Siemens Transportation Systems . The successor models Prima II have been produced since 2008 .

Great I.

The following locomotives belong to the Prima I locomotive family.

Electric locomotives Europe

Alstom Prima EL2U / 4
SNCF BB 27000 (dual system: 1.5 kV = and 25 kV ~), freight transport in France; 180 pieces.
Alstom Prima EL3U / 4
SNCF BB 37000, Veolia BB 37500 (three system: 1.5 kV = as well as 15 kV ~ and 25 kV ~) freight transport in France and Germany; 60 pieces SNCF, 17 pieces Veolia.
Alstom Prima EL4U / 4
SNCF BB 47000 (four system: 1.5 kV = and 3 kV = as well as 15 kV ~ and 25 kV ~), test locomotive, Europe-wide freight transport.
Alstom Prima EL2P / 4
SNCF BB 27300 (dual system: 1.5 kV = and 25 kV ~), suburban trains in the Ile-de-France region ; 67 pieces.

The locomotives for freight traffic are usually not equipped with connections for the supply of the train busbar , the UIC line couplings are at the height of the buffer beams.

Great II

Alstom Prima II at InnoTrans 2010 in Berlin

On May 20, 2008, Alstom presented its new Prima II locomotive platform in Belfort ( France ).

The drives of the vehicles are equipped with IGBT inverters. The vehicles have a modular structure and can be operated with four different voltages (25 kV, 50 Hz and 15 kV, 16.7 Hz single-phase alternating voltage and 1.5 kV and 3 kV direct voltage). With these voltages, the Prima II can generate outputs between 4 and 6.4 MW and reach speeds of 140 to 200 km / h, depending on the configuration chosen by the customer for freight or travel. The six-axle version for heavy freight traffic has an output of 9.6 MW and a top speed of 120 km / h. As with the AGV , the control panel was designed according to the European EUDD standard ( European Driver's Desk ). These aim to make the control panels manufacturer-independent and ergonomic for the train driver.

In November 2007, the first customer for the new Prima generation, the Moroccan State Railways ( ONCF ), ordered 20 electric locomotives. They have been used in the entire Moroccan rail network for freight and travel since 2010.

On the basis of the design of the Prima II, electric double locomotives of the KZ8A series for freight transport were developed for Kazakhstan and 200 units were ordered. In addition, a KZ4AT series was implemented as a passenger train variant for Kazakhstan based on the Prima locomotives and 95 units were ordered. After the pilot series, both locomotive types will be produced in Kazakhstan.

Based on the four-axle KZ4AT passenger locomotive, the Azerbaijani Railway Az Eisenbahnrbaycan Dəmir Yolları (ADY) ordered a series of 10 AZ4A passenger locomotives in 2014 , which are manufactured by Alstom in France under the designation Prima M4 . The first locomotive was completed in October 2017. These locomotives reach a top speed of 160 km / h and as two-system vehicles are suitable for both 25 kV AC voltage and 3 kV DC voltage.

Derived from the Kazakh KZ8A, a double locomotive for freight traffic in Azerbaijan was derived, which is called AZ8A .

A joint venture between Transmashholding and Alstom developed the EP20 series for the Russian railroad RŽD . A special feature is the drive through six axles in three bogies. 200 of these were ordered in 2010 for fast travel.

Using as many components as possible from the EP20 series, the same consortium developed a multiple locomotive for freight traffic under the designation 2ES5 for the RŽD.

Great H3

A completely new development from Alstom Stendal is the type H3, which has nothing in common with the other Prima series in terms of design. It is a three-axle diesel-electric hybrid locomotive in which an accumulator serves as an intermediate energy store. This enables energy-efficient use both in pure battery mode, through energy storage when braking and as an aid to acceleration.

Competitor

The two most important competitors on the market are Bombardier with the Traxx family and Siemens with the Vectron family. Manufacturers Stadler (formerly Vossloh ) with the EURO4000 / EURODUAL series and Škoda with the 109E series play a smaller role in terms of quantity, but with a similar modular structure and areas of application . All have similar modular concepts in which a single locomotive body can be used for all variants - both freight and passenger transport and both diesel and electric locomotives.
