The AZ4A locomotive series from Azərbaycan Dəmir Yolları (ADY) is an electric passenger locomotive that can run under 25 kV alternating current as well as under 3 kV direct current . The locomotives were developed by Alstom and are built for Azerbaijan at the Belfort plant in France .

history

In May 2014, the Azerbaijani Railway ordered 10 AZ4A passenger locomotives and 40 AZ8A freight locomotives . The passenger train locomotives are built by Alstom in France, the freight locomotives are built by the joint venture Electrovoz Kurastyru Zauyty (EKZ) in Nur-Sultan (until 2019 Astana) , the capital of Kazakhstan .

The first AZ4A series locomotive was presented in Belfort on October 9, 2017. A few days after the presentation it was brought to the port of Antwerp in Belgium and loaded onto a cargo ship that brought the locomotive around the Iberian peninsula into the Mediterranean and from there through the Bosporus into the Black Sea to the Georgian port of Poti . After unloading, the locomotive was transferred to Baku on its own wheels , where it arrived at the beginning of February. The approval of the locomotive was not yet completed in May 2018. The second locomotive should have been delivered in summer 2018.

The locomotives are to be used on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars transit connection between the Caspian and Black Seas , which is electrified with 25 kV alternating current and which opened on October 30, 2017 and on which the number of passengers is expected to increase to three million over the next five years . The locomotives are also to be used on the 3 kV direct current electrified transit route between Russia and Iran .

technology

The locomotives belong to the second generation of the Alstom Prima family of locomotives and bear the Alstom designation Prima M4 . They are based on the KZ4AT locomotive developed for the Kazakh Railroad and the E 1500 locomotive supplied to the Moroccan Railroad ONCF .

The four-axle locomotive with a continuous output of 4.8 MW is built for the broad gauge with 1520 mm gauge used in the former Soviet Union and meets the Russian GOST standards. The maximum speed is 160 km / h, the efficiency of the locomotive is stated by Alstom with 86%.
