The AZ8A locomotive series of the Azerbaijan Railway (ADY) is an electric double locomotive for freight transport under 25 kV AC voltage . The locomotive was developed by Alstom and is being built at EKZ in the Kazakh city of Nur-Sultan (Astana until 2019) .

history

In May 2014, the Azerbaijani Railway ordered 10 AZ4A passenger locomotives and 40 AZ8A freight locomotives.

The locomotives are built in the joint venture Electrovoz Kurastyru Zauyty (EKZ), in which the French Alstom has a 75% stake and the Russian manufacturer Transmashholding a 25% stake. In October 2017, the first passenger locomotive built by Alstom in France at the Belfort plant was presented. The first freight locomotive followed in June 2018. It was presented in the EKZ factory in Astana. The locomotives are to be used on the transit connections between the Caspian and Black Seas , as well as between Russia and Iran , whose junction is in Azerbaijan.

technology

The locomotives belong to the second generation of the Alstom Prima family of locomotives and bear the Alstom designation Prima T8 . They are based on the KZ8A locomotive developed for the Kazakh Railroad .

The eight-axle double locomotive is built for broad gauge with 1520 mm gauge , as used in the countries of the former Soviet Union , and meets the Russian GOST standards. In order to meet customer requirements, some changes have been made to the Kazakh version. According to the manufacturer, it is one of the most powerful electric locomotives in the world. With a continuous output of 8.8 MW, the locomotive is designed to pull 9,000-ton trains. The maximum speed is 120 km / h, the efficiency of the locomotive is stated by Alstom at 86%. It is designed for operation at temperatures in the range between −25 ° C and ÷ 50 ° C. The locomotives are designed for long journeys and therefore have large, air-conditioned driver's cabs that are equipped with microwave ovens , refrigerators , underfloor heating and heated driver's seats. There is also a toilet in the locomotive.

Each half of the locomotive has its own underfloor-mounted transformer , which is cooled by two heat exchangers, which are arranged under the engine room floor and are forced to cool by fans. The transformer's expansion vessel is located in the engine room.
