history

The company's roots go back to 1877, when the Belgian Albert Vaucamps founded the Società Anonima Ferrovie Milano-Saronno e Milano-Erba . In 1879 the line between Saronno and Milan was completed, which followed Erba a year later. In 1883 the company was renamed Società Anonima per le Ferrovie Nord Milano (SNM). By the end of the 19th century, the FNM also took over the operation of the Como Lago - Grandate - Malnate - Varese - Laveno , Saronno - Malnate, Novara - Seregno and Saronno - Grandate railway lines . It was in direct competition with the FS predecessor Rete Mediterranea . When the railway companies were nationalized in 1907, the shares of Vaucamp were transferred to the Rete Mediterranea. In 1917, the railway took over the Castellanza - Mendrisio route and thus started cross-border traffic.

Between 1929 and 1953, the FNM lines were electrified and in 1943 the FNM were spun off into a public limited company, which the Lombardy region took over in 1974. In 1952, passenger traffic on the Castellanza – Mendrisio line was abandoned. The line was shut down in 1977, but has since been partially restored as a museum railway by the Club del San Gottardo and integrated into the new Mendrisio – Varese connection (on the Swiss side) . In 1958, passenger traffic on the route between Saronno and Seregno was stopped. In 1966, operations on the route between Malnate and Grandate were closed.

In 1985 the company was converted into a holding company and the operational business was split into two companies: Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio was responsible for rail traffic, Ferrovie Nord Milano Autoservizi (FNMA) for bus traffic. In 1993 the holding company took over the Società Nazionale Ferrovie e Tramvie and thus also the operation of the Brescia – Iseo – Edolo railway line . The bus and train routes taken over were divided up among the company's own subsidiaries. In 1999 Sita Sogin - the bus division of Ferrovie dello Stato - took a 49% stake in Ferrovie Nord Milano Autoservizi . By 2010 it had reduced the stake to 12.5%, the rest was taken over by FNM.

In 2004 the rail business was split up again: into Ferrovie Nord Milano Transporti for passenger transport and Ferrovie Nord Cargo for freight transport. The Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio figured since sub-holding company.

In 2006 Ferrovie Nord Milano SpA was renamed FNM SpA and gave itself a new company logo . Most of the Group's subsidiaries also received a new company name and a new market presence. Among other things from the Ferrovie Nord Milano SpA Esercizio the Ferrovienord SpA , from the Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti Srl the LeNORD Srl and from the Ferrovie Nord Cargo Srl the NordCargo Srl

The operation of these routes was brought into a joint venture with the regional Trenitalia operating company in 2009 , in which both partners each hold 50%. This company, now called Trenord, is to take over further rail services in northern Italy in the future.

Since Trenitalia withdrew from cross-border traffic between Italy - Austria - Germany over the Brenner Pass , LeNORD has been running up to six daily EuroCity trains Munich Hbf - Verona and Munich Hbf - Bologna / Venezia SL, followed in June 2014 by a pair of EuroCity trains Vienna – Venezia SL

With an unconsolidated turnover of 144.992 million euros and 1185 employees, LeNORD SpA has the highest turnover and, measured by the number of employees, is the second largest division of the FNM group behind the joint venture company TreNord . In addition, the FNMA operate three long-distance bus routes, which are particularly important in the tourist sector, because they connect the FNM network with the coasts of the Adriatic and Ligurian seas :

It also operates the long-distance bus route Campione d'Italia - Milan, which runs across Swiss territory, and replacement buses for LeNORD.
