The Saronno – Como line is a double-track branch line operated by Ferrovie Nord Milano in Italy. It is used exclusively for regional traffic.

history

The line was created in 1898 from the expansion of the existing Saronno - Como overland tram . The new railway line ended at Grandate in the Como – Varese line .

1927–1930 the line was expanded to double lanes; the section Como Camerlata – Como Lago, which led through the city of Como with some bottlenecks, remained a single lane.

On May 15, 1937, the entire line was electrified. Since the FNM bundled all of its passenger traffic except for the one to Asso in the trunk axis Milano Nord –Saronno, in order to then distribute it to the individual terminals Novara , Laveno-Mombello and Como Lago, the tangential connection Grandate – Malnate was closed. Since then, all trains have been running on the Como – Saronno route to Milan.

Structure of the route

The route is electrified with 3000 volts direct current . On the Saronno – Como Camerlate section, it has been expanded to consist of two lanes throughout, only the short remaining section to Como Lago station is single lane.

traffic

The traffic is led by Trenord , which took over the concession from LeNord in 2009 following a tender from Lombardy .

Two trains run every hour (only stops between Saronno and Como Lago are indicated) :

  • RE 7 Milano Cadorna –Saronno– Como Lago with stops in Saronno, Lomazzo, Grandate-Breccia, Como Camerlata, Como Borghi and Como Lago
  • R 17 Milano Cadorna – Saronno – Como with stops at all stations.
