Mussum is a district of Bocholt in the Borken district . The name suggests that the place was once a wetter place.

location

Former coat of arms of the Liedern-Werth office

Mussum lies on the border with the town of Hamminkeln , the districts of Dingden and Wertherbruch . In the east, Dingdener Strasse divides the south of Bocholt into the districts of Mussum and Biemenhorst . Alfred-Flender-Strasse and Schaffeldstrasse separate Mussum from the inner-city area.

history

Mussum was mentioned for the first time around 1040, as was most of the other districts of Bocholt. For a time there was a refuge in Mussum, which was built by a knight of Mersmule (other spellings also appear), but could only last a few years and then was torn down again.

Before the territorial reform, Mussum was an independent municipality in the office of Liedern-Werth . On January 1, 1975 it became a district of Bocholt.

Development

The development consists mainly of single-family and semi-detached houses. Multi-family houses are rarely found. The more than 4000 inhabitants live mainly in two settlements, most of them on Dingdener Straße. A third, smaller settlement has formed around the Maria Trösterin church. Here you will also find the parish hall, a home and the Schützenplatz. The newly created center Bocholt-Süd in neighboring Biemenhorst has been taking over local supply for a few years . There is a supermarket, a discounter, two banks and other retailers here. A few specialty shops can be found in Mussum itself. There is no designated center.

Transport links

The Mussum area is crossed by the two federal highways B 67 and B 473 , which also cross here. Mussum can be reached very quickly by car via the B-67 exits “Industriepark Bocholt” and “Bocholt-Zentrum”. In addition , an industrial main track runs from Bocholt train station to the industrial park, which has not been used for some time. In the future, however, this will be possible because a study on the reactivation of this rail line shows a significantly cheaper reactivation than previously assumed. The Bocholt-Wesel railway also runs through Mussum. In the course of the electrification of this railway line, Mussum is to have its own train stop on Händelstrasse. Mussum can be reached by bus using regional line 64 and Stadtbus GmbH line T14.

economy

The economy in Mussum is an important factor in the overall economy of Bocholt. In addition to a small industrial area near the housing estate on Dingdener Straße, there is the Bocholt industrial park in the west of the district. It offers jobs for well over 6000 people and is the largest industrial park in North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of area . The A 3 and A 31 motorways can be reached in a short time thanks to good transport links. The area has its own driveway to the B 67n, which connects the two motorways. The industrial park can also be reached for goods transport via a rail connection. Companies from various industries are located in the industrial park. In addition to small craft businesses, there are medium-sized freight forwarders and international corporations such as the headquarters of Flender GmbH . The foundation stone for the industrial area was laid in 1975, shortly after the regional reform. The total area covers around 253 hectares, with 200 hectares being a purely industrial area. Most of the rest consists of natural areas. This is also what makes this location special. Although you are in the middle of an industrial zone, you can see plenty of green everywhere.

In 2006, the Bocholt City Council decided to expand the park further. To the south of the B 67, another 60 hectares are to be released for development.

Sport and education

You can do sports at TuB Mussum. The club was founded in 1955 and mainly offers football and gymnastics. The sports area includes two grass pitches and a tennis court as well as a training field and is located between Alfred-Flender-Strasse and the Bocholt industrial park. In addition, there is a gym reserved for indoor sports. The Mussumer Kreuzschule is in the immediate vicinity and there is a kindergarten on Beethovenstrasse for small children. There are no secondary schools in Mussum.
