The Flender GmbH is a German gearbox manufacturer . In 2010 the company was merged into Siemens AG as Siemens Mechanical Drives . As of October 1, 2017, this division will again be an independent company and a 100% subsidiary of Siemens AG . It also appears under the name Flender, A Siemens Company .
Company history
On May 15, 1899, Alfred Friedrich from the Flender family of manufacturers founded a company for the production and sale of wooden belt pulleys in Düsseldorf-Reisholz . In 1910 Flender merged with Dieckmann & Tangerding in Bocholt . This enabled the production of cast iron and therefore more stable pulleys. In 1916 the merger with the company Hesselbein & Reygers Maschinenfabrik und Eisengiesserei in Bocholt followed. In 1924 Flender designed its first own clutch, in 1927 its first own variator. This is how gear manufacturing began in Bocholt. Company founder Alfred Friedrich Flender died on August 27, 1939. The overall management of the company was taken over by his son of the same name, Alfred Friedrich Flender. During the Second World War , the production facilities were largely destroyed, but were soon rebuilt, so that production could be resumed on a very small scale in September 1945.
In 1969, the company was converted into a company , which from now on was led by a three-person management board chaired by Alfred Friedrich Flender. He died on November 17th. Between 1975 and 1985 the company expanded rapidly and opened new plants in the USA and Brazil. In 1982 the Himmelwerke in Tübingen were taken over from the Bauknecht bankruptcy. In 1986 A. Friedr. Flender GmbH & Co. KG into a stock corporation. The HDI Group increased its stake to 20%, Commerzbank bought 19% and the West German cooperative central bank took over 10% of the securities.
In 1990 A. Friedr. Flender AG with over 95% in the possession of the Deutsche Babcock AG, Oberhausen. In the same year, Flender was the first German company to take over a company in the new federal states - the Penig transmission plant in Saxony. On December 4, 1991 A. Friedr. Flender AG on the stock exchange. In addition, Thyssen Getriebewerke and Harlass-Guß GmbH in Wittgensdorf / Saxony were integrated into the company. In 1998 Flender sold Flender ATB-Loher Antriebstechnik GmbH and on March 1st took over the shipbuilding and plain bearing production areas from Lohmann & Stolterfoth GmbH. In addition, the decision was made to set up an assembly plant on the premises of Babcock Borsig AG in Voerde-Friedrichsfeld near Wesel. In 1999 Flender celebrated its centenary. Winfried Walzer was appointed chairman of the board by the supervisory board.
In 2000 Babcock Borsig AG sold all shares in A. Friedr. Flender AG to a Citycorp holding company. Venture capital in London. In May 2001 the new Flender assembly plant in Voerde / Friedrichsfeld was opened with a production area of over 30,000 m² and the most modern assembly and test bench facilities. In December, the energy and electrical drive technology divisions were merged into the newly founded Winergy AG.
In 2002 the production at the Bocholt location was completely reorganized. In March 2005, Siemens AG took over Flender Holding GmbH and integrated it into the group.
At locations in Germany, the USA, France, China and India, the Flender Group manufactured drive technology for the automotive industry, shipping and rail vehicles as well as for wind turbines under the Winergy brand. The company is also an important supplier for environmental technology, crane and conveyor technology and the paper and plastics industry.
In 2010, the Winergy division was also integrated into Siemens AG. The brand name Winergy was retained.
In October 2017, the Siemens Mechanical Drives division was spun off from Siemens AG and became Flender GmbH. As a 100% subsidiary of Siemens AG, it also appears under the name Flender, A Siemens Company . Winergy is a registered and protected trademark of Flender GmbH for many economic sectors.
