biography

Giovinco was born in Turin to southern Italian parents . His mother comes from Catanzaro in Calabria , his father from Bisacquino , a village in the province of Palermo . They named him after his grandfather Sebastiano ; However, Giovinco's mother decided to remove the "o" from his first name. Giovinco lived from birth in Beinasco , a municipality of around 18,000 inhabitants in the province of Turin . His father was an amateur soccer player as a sweeper . Sebastian's brother Giuseppe played for the Italian third division club Savona 1907 FBC until mid-October 2015 .

Career

In the club

Beginnings

Sebastian Giovinco gained his first experience in the Borgo Melano team from the district where he grew up. He later joined Giorgio Azzurri in 86 . His sporting career began in 1993 when he was accepted into the youth department of Juventus Turin and went through all youth teams there.

In 2005, Giovinco's career reached its first peak when he won the prestigious tournament in Viareggio with the Juve Primavera team and the Primavera Championship the following year . In the following season he won the Supercup and the Coppa Italia of the Primavera with his team . In the same season ( 2006/07 ) Giovinco gained his first experience in the Juventus first team. He made his debut on May 12, 2007 at the age of 20 in the Serie B match against FC Bologna . There he was substituted on by coach Didier Deschamps in the 76th minute for Raffaele Palladino and provided the template for David Trezeguets 3: 1.

FC Empoli

Giovinco was loaned to FC Empoli in Tuscany in June 2007 as part of the transfer from Sergio Bernardo Almirón to Juve to gain experience. He made his Serie A debut in the match against Fiorentina on August 26, 2007. Coach Luigi Cagni replaced him for Luca Antonini , for whom he completed the last half hour of the encounter. Giovinco scored his premier goal in the top division of Italy on September 30, 2007 with the second goal of his team in a 3-1 win in the game against US Palermo . A few days later, he converted a free kick to 2-2 against AS Roma in the 91st minute. He made his European debut in the second leg of the UEFA Cup match against FC Zurich in the Letzigrund Stadium on October 4th, which ended 3-0 in favor of the Swiss .

Giovinco's status at Empoli was once again significantly improved by the change in coach at half-time in the championship . Alberto Malesani replaced Cagni when relegation to Serie B became apparent. Under the new coach, the young player became a regular player. Despite Empoli's efforts, the team was relegated at the end of the season. Nevertheless, Giovinco recommended himself with his achievements for larger tasks. He scored six goals in 35 games and did the preparatory work for four goals.

Juventus Turin

The midfielder's performance did not go unnoticed in Turin either; therefore Juventus decided to bring Giovinco back from Empoli to complete his first full season with his home club. On August 26, 2008 Giovinco started for Juve in the Champions League qualification against Artmedia Petržalka in Bratislava in the 2008/09 season . He played his first Serie A game for Juventus on September 24, 2008 against Calcio Catania , in which he prepared the goal of Amauri . He scored his first goal for Turin on December 7th on matchday 15 of Serie A against US Lecce with a free-kick that made it 1-0. On September 30, 2008 Giovinco played in the Champions League against FC BATE Borisov from Belarus and prepared two goals from Vincenzo Iaquinta in this game .

These and other achievements prompted the management of Juventus to extend Giovinco's contract in his first half of the year to June 30, 2013 ahead of schedule.

However, his second half of the year should not be so successful. Juve's coach Claudio Ranieri did without the young player in many games and instead preferred Marco Marchionni and old star Pavel Nedvěd to the attacking left midfield position. So he usually only had a place on the bench. In the Italian Cup, however, the coach relied on him; so he scored his first goal in the round of 16 against Catania on January 14, 2009 and moved with his team into the next round.

Giovinco finished his first full season at Juventus with 19 games. He scored two goals and participated with seven assists in hits by his teammates.

Parma FC

During the summer break of 2010, Giovinco moved to Parma FC on loan until July 2011 . The table eighth of the 2009/10 season also had a purchase option (three million euros) over 50 percent of the rights to the Italian, which he exercised on June 22, 2011. In the 2011/12 season Giovinco was the most successful goalscorer of his team with 15 league goals. He was also one of the best preparer of the Serie A .

Return to Juventus

For the 2012/13 season Giovinco returned to Juventus Turin.

Toronto FC

After the expiry of his contract at Juventus Giovinco should from July 1, 2015 Canadian MLS - franchise Toronto FC switch. On February 2, 2015, Giovinco's contract with Juve was prematurely terminated and he immediately moved to Toronto FC. With the Canadians he scored 22 goals in the regular season in his first season and was thus the top scorer in the league. He won the league's best new player award, the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award , in November 2015 .

In the national team

From 2003 to 2009, Giovinco went through all of Italy's junior national teams from the U-16 selection . During his time in the U-21 national team , he was voted best player in the Toulon tournament , which the Azzurrini won in 2008. He also took part with the U-21s in the 2008 Olympic soccer tournament in Beijing and China, as well as in the U-21 European Championship in 2009 in Sweden .

Giovinco made his debut for the Italian national team on February 9, 2011 under Cesare Prandelli in a friendly against Germany . As a result, he was a regular member of the Squadra Azzurra squad and also took part with her in the 2012 European Championship , where he was substituted on in two preliminary round games. Also in the Confederations Cup in 2013 Giovinco was in the squad of the Azzurri . In the preliminary round against Japan he scored his first international goal to make it 4: 3.

After that, however, Giovinco lost his place in the national team and missed the 2014 World Cup , in which Italy failed in the group stage . After the World Cup, he was initially part of Antonio Conte's squad again , but following his move to Toronto FC , he was not considered. It wasn't until October 2015 that he was reappointed by his former coach. His missions against Azerbaijan and Norway , however, are also his last appearances for the national team. His last nomination comes from October 2018.
