The field of participants consisted of the Canadian clubs Toronto FC , Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact from Major League Soccer and FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury , which play in the North American Soccer League , which participate in professional play in North America .

The tournament will be played in knockout mode with semi-finals and finals. Three of the semi-final places were awarded to the teams from the MLS.
