The Canadian Championship was played for the second time in 2009. The tournament took place from May 6, 2009 to June 18, 2009 in league format. The three participants competed against each other once at home and away. Defending champion was Montreal Impact .

The field of participants consisted of the Canadian clubs Toronto FC from Major League Soccer , Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps , both of which play in the second-rate USL First Division . The winner is entitled to participate in the qualification for the CONCACAF Champions League 2009/10 .

Toronto FC won the tournament with a 6-1 win over previous year's winner Montreal in the last group game because of the better goal difference, ahead of the tied Whitecaps.
