  • New Delhi / India : The 64-year-old MP Meira Kumar is unanimously elected chairman of the federal parliament. She is the first woman in this position and also a Dalit (former caste of the Untouchables). It is expected that the mother of three children will enforce the long-planned 33 percent quota for women in parliament. Despite 59 female MPs, the parliament is still far below.
  • San Pedro Sula / Honduras : The 34 OAS states decide to invite Cuba to join , but Cuba declines the invitation.

  • Essen / Germany : The German company Arcandor applied for rescue aid from the European Union and one day later an application for state aid in the amount of 437 million euros from the German federal government in order to avert the probable bankruptcy on June 12, 2009.
  • Cairo / Egypt : In a speech at the University of Cairo, US President Barack Obama promotes a new beginning in the relationship between the United States and the Muslim world .
  • Cracow / Poland : At an international commemorative event in Cracow, heads of government from eleven countries, including the German Chancellor Merkel , pay tribute to Poland's pioneering role in the political change of 1989/1990. After the parliamentary elections on June 4, 1989, the opposition Solidarność appointed the first prime minister in the Eastern bloc who did not insist on the claim to leadership of political socialism. Many other cities in the former “ Eastern Bloc ” commemorate liberation from communism on the 20th anniversary of this election .

  • Berlin / Germany : Remembrance of the popular uprising in the GDR in 1953 . In 1954, June 17th was declared the Day of German Unity ("National Holiday") by the Federal Government .
  • Essen / Germany : A 14-year-old boy is hit by a meteorite and is slightly injured.
  • Lima / Peru : Prime Minister Yehude Simon submits his resignation because of the bloody clashes between Indians and security forces.
  • Munich / Germany : Education strikes are taking place in several German university cities to improve the educational situation.
  • Sa'da / Yemen : Yemenis loyal to the government organize a protest march against the kidnapping of the German hostages. The demonstrators hold up pictures of the kidnapped H. family from Saxony, while helicopters and ground troops are looking for those who have still disappeared in the north of the country. The country's government set aside 180,000 euros for clues.
  • Tehran / Iran : The protests against the presidential elections last weekend are continuing unabated.

  • Athens / Greece : The Acropolis Museum opens.
  • London / United Kingdom : The government fears the deaths of two Iraqi hostages. The Iraqi authorities handed over two bodies to Great Britain that night, said British Foreign Minister David Miliband . These may be two out of five hostages kidnapped in Baghdad more than two years ago , but the dead have not yet been identified. Miliband said that all thoughts were now with the families of the five men and that the relatives feared the worst. An autopsy had been ordered. The five Britons - a computer specialist and four security guards - were presumably kidnapped by Shiite militias in May 2007 at the Treasury Department in Baghdad, who had announced via video message that they would kill the men if Britain did not withdraw its soldiers from Iraq .
  • Vaziristan / Pakistan : A reporter kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan seven months ago escapes his kidnappers along with an Afghan colleague , according to a report in the New York Times . David S. Rohde and Tahir Ludin had climbed over a wall in a building in which they were being held in the North Waziristan region of Pakistan. A Pakistani soldier then led them to a nearby base, it said. 41-year-old Rohde traveled to Kabul in November to work on a book on the history of the American intervention in Afghanistan, and was then kidnapped on November 10 in the Logar province south of Kabul.

  • Ludwigshafen / Germany : In an industrial accident at the BASF plant , several tons of the HPN substance run into the Rhine . A Rhine alarm is triggered.
  • Tehran / Iran : The wave of protests against the presidential elections is not ebbing. Rumors that the Guardian Council admitted the vote manipulation are rejected. The British embassy is preparing to return all diplomats from Iran and Italy is opening its embassy to injured and wounded demonstrators. A total of 457 people are arrested during nationwide protests.
  • Washington, DC / United States : Nine people are killed in a serious accident on the Washington Metro.
