- Essen / Germany : The German company Arcandor applied for rescue aid from the European Union and one day later an application for state aid in the amount of 437 million euros from the German federal government in order to avert the probable bankruptcy on June 12, 2009.
- Cairo / Egypt : In a speech at the University of Cairo, US President Barack Obama promotes a new beginning in the relationship between the United States and the Muslim world .
- Cracow / Poland : At an international commemorative event in Cracow, heads of government from eleven countries, including the German Chancellor Merkel , pay tribute to Poland's pioneering role in the political change of 1989/1990. After the parliamentary elections on June 4, 1989, the opposition Solidarność appointed the first prime minister in the Eastern bloc who did not insist on the claim to leadership of political socialism. Many other cities in the former “ Eastern Bloc ” commemorate liberation from communism on the 20th anniversary of this election .

- Austria : In Vienna and the provincial capitals, the Long Night of Churches is taking place for the fourth time , which is also aimed at those far away. - Vaziristan / Pakistan : A reporter kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan seven months ago escapes his kidnappers along with an Afghan colleague , according to a report in the New York Times . David S. Rohde and Tahir Ludin had climbed over a wall in a building in which they were being held in the North Waziristan region of Pakistan. A Pakistani soldier then led them to a nearby base, it said. 41-year-old Rohde traveled to Kabul in November to work on a book on the history of the American intervention in Afghanistan, and was then kidnapped on November 10 in the Logar province south of Kabul.

- Montevideo / Uruguay : primaries for the presidential election
- Tegucigalpa / Honduras : The left-wing President Manuel Zelaya is imprisoned by military units because of a controversial constitutional referendum. Parliament elects its chairman Roberto Micheletti , a member of Zelaya's Liberal Party, as interim president. While the Supreme Court speaks of a legitimate dismissal, the capital is witnessing violent demonstrations by government supporters.
- Tirana / Albania : The conservative ruling party of Sali Berisha wins the parliamentary elections ahead of the opposition socialists. The elections are seen as a test of the democracy of the Balkan state and, according to reports from EU election observers, proceed without any major incidents.

- Baghdad / Iraq : The US armed forces withdraw from the larger cities and hand over control there to the Iraqi armed forces . The Iraqi government then declared June 30th to be a new national holiday. All US armed forces are expected to leave the country by 2011.
- Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Constitutional Court decides on the Lisbon Treaty . The court declares that the EU Treaty of Lisbon is compatible with the Basic Law.
- Central Europe : Continuous heavy rain caused by the foothills of the Qinton Mediterranean Depression has led to floods since June 22nd and as a result to debris flows and destruction of the infrastructure. In Upper Bavaria , Austria , southern Poland , the north of the Czech Republic and Hungary , flooding has meanwhile decreased. In northern and eastern Austria, rainfall in June reached over 200% of normal.
- Moroni / Comoros : Flight YI 626 of the airline Yemenia crashes in fire with 153 people (142 passengers, 11 crew members) in the Indian Ocean . The aircraft of the type Airbus A310-324 was on the approach for landing at the airport of Moroni . So far, one survivor has been rescued.
- St. Paul / United States : After several recounts, the Supreme Court of the State decides in Minnesota, the Democrat Al Franken the election on 4 November 2008 by a margin of 312 of a total of 2.9 million votes before the Republican and incumbent Norm Coleman won , giving the 60th Senate seat to the Democrats, who will get the majority of the 100 seats in the US Senate required to prevent filibusters .
