Bagua is the capital of the Bagua Province in the Amazonas region of northern Peru . In the 2017 census, the population was 24,224.

location

It lies on a natural platform on the Río Utcubamba . Bagua is around 162 kilometers from the provincial capital of the neighboring province of Chachapoyas . Neighboring towns are Bagua Grande in the southeast (20 km), Bellavista in the west (20 km) and the village of La Peca in the east (10 km). A connection leads to the national road N3 in the south, 10 km away.

The Bagua massacre in 2009

In April 2009, members of indigenous peoples in the region around Bagua u. a. to protest with roadblocks on highways against gas and oil production projects that are destroying their living space. President Alan García had the police put down their riot. On June 5, 2009, near Bagua, there was fighting between indigenous people and special police units, who were not familiar with the local conditions and the existing agreements with the indigenous people, and a massacre of indigenous people. 35 people were killed, including twelve police officers. Over 150 people were injured. Shortly after the incident, the Peruvian Congress overturned the controversial law that would have allowed expropriations without hearing the tribes. In September 2016, 52 indigenous people were acquitted of having shot the twelve police officers. Who the perpetrators were, remained unclear.
