Bagua Grande is the capital of the Utcubamba Province in the Amazonas region of northern Peru . The city is located in the district of the same name . At the 2017 census it had 32,519 inhabitants, 10 years earlier the number of inhabitants was 25,930. This makes Bagua Grande the most populous city in the Amazon region.
Bagua Grande is located at an altitude of 440 m on the left bank of the Río Utcubamba , 45 km above its confluence with the Río Marañón . The city is located in a basin landscape bordered by the ridges of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The city of Bagua is located 17 km northwest of Bagua Grande .
