The province of Utcubamba is located in northern Peru in the Amazon region . It has an area of ​​3859.93 km², which means that it occupies 9.83% of the area of ​​the Amazon region. In the 2017 census, the population was 107,237, 10 years earlier it was 109,043. The provincial administration is located in Bagua Grande .

Geographical location

The province of Utcubamba is located on the lower reaches of the Río Utcubamba . In the west, the Río Marañón forms the provincial border. The mountain ranges of the Peruvian Central Cordillera run on both sides of the Utcubamba Valley .

The province of Utcubamba borders the provinces Bagua and the Condorcanqui in the north, the province Bongará in the east, the province Luya in the south and the region Cajamarca in the east .

The name Utcubamba comes from the local Quechua . Utco means "cotton" and pampa is a "plane". Utcubamba describes a plain on which cotton is planted. The river Utcubamba is named after this.
