The district of Cajaruro is located in the province of Utcubamba in the Amazonas region in northern Peru . The district was established on September 17, 1964. It has an area of ​​1763.23 km². The 2017 census counted 23,089 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 26,225, in 2007 it was 26,735. The administrative center is the 490  m high town of Cajaruro with 1829 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cajaruro is located on the right bank of the Río Utcubamba , just under 3 km northeast of the provincial capital Bagua Grande .

Geographical location

The district of Cajaruro is located in the northeast of the province of Utcubamba. A mountain range of the Peruvian Central Cordillera crosses the district. The Río Utcubamba flows along the southwestern district boundary , the extreme northeast is traversed by the Río Chiriaco in a northwest direction. In the northeast is the Cordillera de Colán national reserve.

The district of Cajaruro borders in the southwest with the districts Jamalca and Bagua Grande , in the northwest with the districts Copallin , Aramango and Imaza (all three in the province of Bagua ), in the northeast with the district Nieva ( province Condorcanqui ), in the east with the district Yambrasbamba ( Province of Bongará ) and in the southeast to the districts of Florida and Shipasbamba (both also in the Province of Bongará).
