The Bagua Grande district is located in the Utcubamba Province in the Amazonas region in northern Peru . The district has an area of ​​746.64 km². The 2017 census counted 50,841 residents. In 1993 the population was 40,790, in 2007 47,336. The administrative seat is the 440  m high provincial capital Bagua Grande with 32,519 inhabitants (as of 2017). Bagua Grande is located on the left bank of the Río Utcubamba .

Geographical location

The Bagua Grande District is centrally located in the Utcubamba Province. A mountain range of the Peruvian Central Cordillera crosses the district. The Río Utcubamba flows along the northeastern district boundary to the northwest.

The district of Bagua Grande borders in the northwest on El Milagro , in the northeast on the districts Bagua , Copallin (both in the province of Bagua ) and Cajaruro , in the southeast on the district Jamalca and in the south on the districts Lonya Grande , Yamón and Cumba .
