- Mardin / Turkey : 44 people are killed in the Mardin massacre in southeastern Turkey. Another 17 people are seriously injured.

- Karlsruhe / Germany : According to the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court, the legislative restriction to “ married double names ” is compatible with the Basic Law .
- Strasbourg / France : The European Parliament passes a regulation banning the trade in seal products , which will apply in the territory of the European Union from 2010. The EU-wide trade restrictions are intended on the one hand to abolish fragmentation of the internal market and on the other to harmonize animal welfare standards across the EU.
- Vitoria-Gasteiz / Spain : The socialist Patxi López is elected President of the Basque Country , replacing the nationalists who have ruled for three decades.

- Prague / Czech Republic : The Senate ratifies the Lisbon Treaty .

- Berlin / Germany : The grand coalition agrees on a ban on paintball games.
- Düsseldorf / Germany : Porsche gives up the unilateral takeover of Volkswagen AG , instead both automobile groups announce plans for a merger.
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Due to the ongoing financial crisis, the European Central Bank (ECB) is lowering the key interest rate to 1.0%. In addition to the rate cut, Jean-Claude Trichet announced a number of “unconventional” monetary policy measures. From June 23, commercial banks will receive long-term tenders with a term of twelve months and the prospect of purchasing covered bonds (such as Pfandbriefe ) denominated in euros for over 60 billion euros is in prospect. The European Investment Bank (EIB) will be approved as a counterparty in refinancing transactions with the ECB from July 8 , in order to be able to better supply European companies with loans.
- Prague / Czech Republic : At the founding summit of the Eastern Partnership under the leadership of the Czech EU Council Presidency to intensify cooperation between the European Union and the former Soviet Union states Armenia , Azerbaijan , Georgia , Moldova , Ukraine and Belarus , “political association” and "Deeper economic integration" as the main goals.

- Berlin / Germany : The online petition against the draft law initiated by Ursula von der Leyen to combat child pornography in communication networks achieves the necessary 50,000 votes within a few days, which enables the initiators to speak in person when the matter is publicly discussed in the petitions committee of the German Bundestag . The signatories are presumably not concerned with easy access to child pornography , but rather with as little surveillance as possible on the Internet in general .

- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , Malakand / Pakistan : According to Army General David H. Petraeus, around 200 people die in fighting in the Swat Valley and in the neighboring Shangla district against the Taliban . An estimated 200,000 people are on the run in the region.

- Cape Canaveral / United States : The space shuttle Atlantis starts with seven astronauts at 8:01 p.m. CEST on a repair mission for the Hubble space telescope .
- Sankt Augustin / Germany : Around 9 a.m., a planned rampage at the Albert Einstein High School in Sankt Augustin near Bonn was probably prevented. Apparently a 16-year-old student was planning an arson attack on the school. According to the police, this was only prevented because she was surprised by a schoolgirl in the ladies' room while preparing. The perpetrator attacked with a knife and fled. Late in the evening, she faced the police officers.
- Tehran / Iran : The Iranian Court of Appeal is converting the eight-year prison sentence previously imposed on Roxana Saberi on suspicion of espionage into a two-year suspended sentence. Saberi had previously been supported in her appointment by US President Barack Obama in order to facilitate the dialogue with the country sought by Obama.

- Moscow / Russia : The final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 was won by Norwegian Alexander Rybak with his entry Fairytale . Activists such as Peter Tatchell and Nikolai Alexejew are arrested at an LGBT demonstration .
- New Delhi / India : The election results of the parliamentary elections, which took place over several weeks, are announced. After that, the ruling Congress party wins a simple majority of the seats and is by far the strongest party in parliament, which will hold its first session on June 2, 2009. Around 60 percent of the 714 million eligible voters cast their votes.
- Sri Jayewardenepura / Sri Lanka : The government declares the victory over the LTTE rebels and the civil war over.
- Vienna / Austria : 17th Life Ball .

- Sri Lanka : Two days after the government, the armed forces also declare the end of the so-called "civil war" against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam , in which at least 80,000 people have lost their lives since 1983.

- Jakarta / Indonesia : At least 97 people are killed and 19 others are injured when a military aircraft crashes into a residential area. The machine had started in Jakarta and was on its way to Papua .
- Solukhumbu / Nepal , Tibet / China : Ralf Dujmovits is the first German to climb all 14 eight-thousanders . At 11 a.m. local time, he and his wife Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner stand on the summit of Lhotse (8,516 m), his last remaining eight-thousander. In total, he has climbed an eight-thousander 17 times.
