    Space shuttle Atlantis
    • Cape Canaveral / United States : The space shuttle Atlantis starts with seven astronauts at 8:01 p.m. CEST on a repair mission for the Hubble space telescope .
    • Sankt Augustin / Germany : Around 9 a.m., a planned rampage at the Albert Einstein High School in Sankt Augustin near Bonn was probably prevented. Apparently a 16-year-old student was planning an arson attack on the school. According to the police, this was only prevented because she was surprised by a schoolgirl in the ladies' room while preparing. The perpetrator attacked with a knife and fled. Late in the evening, she faced the police officers.
    • Tehran / Iran : The Iranian Court of Appeal is converting the eight-year prison sentence previously imposed on Roxana Saberi on suspicion of espionage into a two-year suspended sentence. Saberi had previously been supported in her appointment by US President Barack Obama in order to facilitate the dialogue with the country sought by Obama.

    • Athens / Greece : The so-called Bilderberg Conference will take place until Sunday at the Nafsika Astir Palace Hotel in the Athens suburb of Vouliagmeni. Around 150 influential politicians as well as people from business and the nobility take part in the meeting. The focus of the meeting is the international economic crisis.
    • Berlin / Germany : Due to drastically falling tax revenues of the German total state budget, according to the will tax experts create a record borrowing over the next four years.
    • Kourou / French Guiana : An Ariane 5 rocket with the Herschel and Planck space telescopes on board successfully starts.
    • Rangoon / Myanmar : The opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi is arrested a few days before her house arrest expires.
