- Berlin / Germany : The Civil Status Reform Act (PStRG) of February 19, 2007, after which the civil status registers are converted into electronic registers during a five-year conversion phase, the withholding tax and the reformed inheritance tax come into force.

- Baghdad / Iraq : At least 23 people die and 42 others are injured in a suicide attack south of Baghdad.
- Kiev / Ukraine : In the gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine, which has escalated since the turn of the year, Ukraine is preparing the European Union so that less gas can flow from Russia to Europe, as “technical problems could reduce the flow”.

- Blaubeuren / Germany : Adolf Merckle , who got into financial difficulties due to the financial crisis, commits suicide . He was run over by a train near Ulm .
- St. Paul / United States : Al Franken of the Democratic Party wins the Senatorial elections in the US state of Minnesota .

- Bischofshofen / Austria : Wolfgang Loitzl (AUT) wins the 57th Four Hills Tournament ahead of Simon Ammann ( SUI ).
- Jerusalem / Israel : During the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip , 45 Palestinian refugees are killed in several school buildings. More than 635 people have died since the attacks began.
- Russia : The Russian gas monopoly Gazprom is drastically cutting gas supplies to European countries . In the early morning, OMV AG reports a failure of ninety percent of the normally supplied Russian gas, whereupon a crisis team meets.
- Washington, DC / United States : The 111th House of Representatives of the United States begins its work.
Wednesday January 7th 2009
- Europe : Winter has Europe firmly under control everywhere. Many European airports will be closed and trains will be stopped at train stations.
- Gaza Strip / Palestinian Territories : The Israeli Armed Forces suspend the fighting in Operation Cast Lead for three hours in order to allow rudimentary supplies to the population through humanitarian organizations.
- Russia , Ukraine : The gas dispute today leads to a complete failure of natural gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine to the importing countries west of Ukraine. Austria and the Czech Republic are hardest hit, as they can only get their gas from Russia via the route through Ukraine. The Russian side accuses Ukraine of stopping gas and Ukraine accuses Russian company Gazprom of stopping gas supply.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Shortly before the completion of the takeover of Dresdner Bank, the state bank fund is providing Commerzbank , the second largest German financial institution, with a further capital injection of ten billion euros and is taking over 25 percent plus one share in Commerzbank ( partial nationalization ).
- San José / Costa Rica : In an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale , at least 15 people die and 42 more are missing.

- Ankara / Turkey : Egemen Bağış ( AKP ) is appointed first Turkish European Minister. He will take over from Foreign Minister Ali Babacan to lead Turkey's accession negotiations with the European Union .
- Arabian Sea : The Somali hijackers of the Sirius Star release the Saudi Arabian oil tanker they hijacked on November 15, 2008 for a ransom of three million US dollars .

- Arabian Sea : Six of the Somali pirates who kidnapped the Sirius Star are killed while their ship capsizes while fleeing. Parts of the ransom of three million US dollars are lost.
- Chemnitz / Germany : Helene Fischer wins her second folk music crown .

- Jakarta / Indonesia : The Teratai Prima ferry with almost 270 people on board sinks off the coast of Sulawesi , 22 people can initially be rescued, around 250 are still missing.
- Los Angeles / United States : In the 66th ceremony of the Golden Globe Awards , the drama continues as the most successful movie Slumdog Millionaire of British director Danny Boyle through.

- Berlin / Germany : Chancellor Angela Merkel ( CDU ) and her deputy Frank-Walter Steinmeier ( SPD ) present the economic stimulus package II before the federal press conference . The key points are the lowering of the basic tax rate to 14% and the lowering of the contribution rate to statutory health insurance .
- Gaza / Palestinian Territories : In the most violent fighting to date, the Israeli army is advancing towards the center of Gaza. According to Palestinian sources, at least 940 people have died and 4,400 have been injured so far. At the same time, an initiative for a ceasefire is being worked on.

- Brussels / Belgium : The art installation Entropa by the Czech artist David Černý triggers outrage. Bulgaria criticizes the fact that it is symbolized by squat toilets , and the highways symbolizing Germany show a swastika . - Gaza / Palestinian Autonomous Territories : As the Israeli Armed Forces advance further , the headquarters of the United Nations Relief Organization for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East is hit and partially destroyed. The number of fatalities from Operation Cast Lead rises to over 1,000.
- New York / United States : After ditching of US Airways - flight 1549 on the Hudson River , all 150 passengers and crew on board an Airbus A320 evacuated. The aircraft is then towed to a jetty about 3 km downstream. The plane was on its way from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte . The pilot reported problems with a flock of birds shortly after take-off . Eyewitnesses state that the aircraft did not climb fast enough after take-off and then lost altitude, and passengers report engine problems and engine failure.
- Wiesbaden / Germany : The Federal Statistical Office reports that the inflation rate in Germany reached 2.6% in 2008, the highest level since 1994.

- Dublin / Ireland : In the wake of the financial crisis , the Irish government nationalized the Anglo Irish Bank .
- New York / United States : The oil price has fallen to 33 US dollars a barrel, its lowest level in five years.
- New York / United States : The major US banks Citigroup and Bank of America report losses of 8.29 and 2.4 billion US dollars respectively for the final quarter of 2008 as a result of the financial crisis .
- Vilnius / Lithuania : As a result of the financial crisis there are demonstrations and violent riots in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

- Kiev / Ukraine , Moscow / Russia : Both countries agree on gas prices for Western Europe.
- San Salvador / El Salvador : In the parliamentary elections , the guerrilla movement FMLN wins against the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance .
- Wiesbaden / Germany : In the new elections to the Hessian state parliament , the CDU and the FDP achieve a majority capable of governing. The SPD got their worst result, the Greens and the FDP their best result in a Hessian state election. The Left Party succeeds in re-entering the state parliament.

- Moscow / Russia : The human rights lawyer Stanislaw Markelow and Anastassija Baburowa , an employee of the Novaya Gazeta newspaper , are shot dead in the street. Markelow was legal counsel for Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist who was critical of the government .

- Moscow / Russia : After a two-week break, Russia is resuming gas supplies via Ukraine to Western Europe .
- Washington, DC / United States : Barack Obama of the Democratic Party becomes the 44th President of the United States . In his inaugural address, he outlined the geostrategic course that the USA is striving for : "We are ready to lead again."
- Wiesbaden / Germany : The Society for the German Language chooses the expression “distressed banks” as the unword of the year 2008.

- Reykjavík / Iceland : Due to the financial and banking crisis in autumn 2008, more than 2,000 demonstrators blame Prime Minister Geir Haarde for the impending bankruptcy of Iceland and the rising unemployment. The protesters stormed a meeting of the Icelandic Social Democratic Party and then moved to parliament . Prime Minister Geir Haarde was only able to leave his official residence under police protection.
- Washington, DC / United States : US President Barack Obama takes the oath of office a second time because the official swearing in by John Roberts was not in the correct word order.

- Ruhengeri / Rwanda : Rwandan soldiers arrest Laurent Nkunda , the leader of the armed Congolese National Congress for the Defense of the People , after a brief escape from the Congo. Nkunda is responsible for various crimes against humanity in the Third Congo War .
- Shijiazhuang / China : In the trial of baby milk powder contaminated with melamine , a court in Hebei province sentenced three men to death.
- Washington, DC / United States : US President Barack Obama orders the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to be closed within one year.
