Patriarchate of Moscow and all of Russia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia is an Orthodox patriarchate based in Moscow . It has supreme jurisdiction over the Russian Orthodox Church . Patriarch Kyrill I has been the head since 2009 .

territory

The ecclesiastical jurisdiction extends over the territory of the Russian Federation . The Patriarchate of Moscow also includes “autonomous” Orthodox churches in Kazakhstan , Moldova , Ukraine , Belarus and Japan, as well as numerous eparchies in Europe, the USA and Argentina. The traditional name refers to the historical area of the Rus and all East Slavic areas.

For Moscow, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine , which was given ecclesiastical independence (autocephaly) in 2019 by the Patriarch of Constantinople , Bartholomew I , who is also subordinate to the Russian Orthodox Church, is an integral part of the indivisible Moscow Patriarchate. The detachment was already an issue in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

history

The Russian Orthodox Church had been under the Patriarchate of Constantinople since its inception in 988 , but had in fact been autocephaly since 1448 . Its metropolitan seat was moved from Kiev to Moscow in 1326 . In 1589 the Moscow Synod declared the establishment of the Patriarchate. A synod in Constantinople in 1590 carried out canonical recognition. In 1721 it was repealed by Peter the Great as part of his church reform. The Russian Church was then directed by the Holy Synod under state supervision. After the October Revolution of 1917, the Patriarchate was re-established.
