The Metropolis of Bessarabia is the Bucharest Patriarchate Subordinate Eastern Orthodox Church in the Republic of Moldova . It is located in the St. Teodora de la Sihla Cathedral in Chișinău.

history

Even before 1944, the Orthodox churches in Bessarabia were subordinate to the Bucharest Patriarch. But after the annexation of Bessarabia by the Soviet Union , they had to become part of the Moscow Patriarchate .

In 1992 conflicts arose when a large part of the Orthodox priests in Moldova again acknowledged the Romanian- oriented Orthodox Church of Bessarabia . The Moscow-based government in Chișinău (capital of Moldova) supported the Moscow Patriarchate. In 2001, the Moldovan government was convicted by the European Court of Human Rights for violating religious freedom. In 2004, around 20% of the Orthodox communities in the Republic of Moldova belonged to the Orthodox Church of Bessarabia.
