history

In 1871 the Turkestan Eparchy was formed with its center in Werny (now Almaty).

On June 5, 1945, the Almaty Eparchy was founded as the only one in Kazakhstan. On 31 January 1991 she has been split into three separate eparchies: Alma-Ata Semipalatinsk , Uralsk - Aktobe and Shymkent -Astana.

In 1999, taking into account the status of the capital Astana, the Alma-Ata-Semipalatinsk eparchy was renamed Astana and Almaty eparchy. The territory of the new eparchy comprised six administrative units of the Republic of Kazakhstan: the cities of Astana and Almaty, the Almaty region, East Kazakhstan , the Pavlodar region and the Karagandy region .

On October 6, 2010, the areas of Pavlodar, East Kazakhstan and Karagandy were removed from the eparchy, as the two new eparchies were established in Pavlodar and Karagandy.
