The Ascension Cathedral

The Ascension Cathedral ( Russian Вознесенский Кафедральный Собор ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in the Kazakh city of Almaty . The cathedral, built between 1904 and 1907, is located in the middle of the park of 28 Panfilowzy and is one of the landmarks of the city.

history

Construction of the cathedral began on September 26, 1904, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the city. The Russian architect Andrei Pawlowitsch Senkow was responsible for the construction . After four years of construction, it was consecrated on July 30, 1907. In January 1911 the cathedral was shaken by an earthquake , but sustained little damage thanks to the wooden construction. The southeast corner of the bell tower had sagged slightly and the windows were broken.

With the increasing persecution of religious activities in the Soviet Union , the closure of the cathedral was requested in the late 1920s. On October 29, 1929, the Alma-Ata Regional Executive Committee finally decided to close the cathedral. In the same year the bells were removed from the tower, the iconostasis destroyed and all furnishings, icons and books looted. In the 1930s, a radio station was set up in the building and the Republican Museum of Local History opened. For this purpose, the interior of the cathedral was significantly rebuilt and changed.

In the 1970s, the cathedral was placed under state protection as a monument of national importance. The restoration began in 1973. Although the building was not restored to its original purpose as a church building, the original interior of the cathedral was partially restored. After the Republican Museum of Local History, the building also housed the Museum of Architectural History and the Society for the Protection of Monuments; The building was also used as a concert and exhibition hall.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the church made efforts to use the building as a cathedral again. In 1994 the government of Kazakhstan decided to use the building as a museum in the future and provided financial means to restore the interior. On May 2, 1994, a service was held for the first time in 65 years. On April 18, 1995, the cathedral was officially returned to the Almaty and Semipalatinsk Eparchies .
