The Central State Museum of Kazakhstan ( Kazakh Қазақстан Республикасы Мемлекеттік орталық музейі Russian Центральный Государственный музей Казахстана , English Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan ) is a museum in the Kazakh city of Almaty . The museum was founded in 1931 and, with more than 300,000 different exhibits, is the oldest and largest museum in Kazakhstan, as well as one of the largest museums in Central Asia .

The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is located in the center of Almaty near the City Hall and Republic Square. More than 300,000 exhibits are on display on three floors on a total area of ​​17,557 square meters . The history of Kazakhstan from the beginning of life on earth to the present day is presented in the four large museum rooms .

The museum's collection includes the areas of paleontology , archeology , ethnography , written documents and a collection of around 80,000 photographs.

history

The history of the museum goes back to the 1830s when the collections were exhibited in Orenburg , Russia . The museum at that time was the Museum of the Orenburg Region, organized by the Nepliuevskii Military Academy. One of the organizers was Vladimir Ivanovich Dal , the author of the most extensive dictionary of the Russian language.

In 1931 the museum opened in the building of the Ascension Cathedral , which had previously been closed. The current museum building on Furmanow Strasse was moved into in 1985.
